IAS Officer Recalls Friend’s ‘Heartbreak’ Over Madhuri Dixit’s Marriage During UPSC Days
Pune, Maharashtra – In a rare and candid revelation, IAS officer and Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration Commissioner, Tukaram Mundhe, recently shared a humorous anecdote from his formative years as a UPSC Civil Services aspirant. During an open interview titled “Unstoppable Tukaram” at Pune’s Balgandharva Rangmandir, Mundhe recounted how a friend’s profound distress over Bollywood star Madhuri Dixit’s marriage became an unexpected, albeit memorable, distraction during their intense study period.
The incident, which took place around 1998-99, involved Mundhe’s friend, Pankaj, who would later go on to become a Customs Commissioner. At the time, both men were immersed in rigorous preparation for the demanding UPSC Mains examination. Their daily routines were characterized by late-night studies, minimal sleep, and an unwavering focus on their academic pursuits.
“We both used to study late into the night,” Mundhe recalled. “He would sleep an hour or two later than me. I used to sleep around two or three in the morning, while he would sleep around three or four and wake up a little late.”
‘I Don’t Know Whether There Were Actual Tears’
One morning, Mundhe, who typically resumed his studies shortly after waking, was in a corridor between his room and the library when Pankaj approached him. Without a word, his friend put an arm around his neck and began to cry.
Mundhe described his immediate reaction as one of profound alarm. The unexpected display of emotion, coupled with Pankaj’s silence, left him worried. “Seeing him cry shocked me. I asked him what had happened. But he kept crying. I don’t know whether there were actual tears in his eyes, but he was making those weeping sounds,” Mundhe explained.
The IAS officer confessed that he began to fear the worst, imagining a serious personal tragedy had befallen his friend. “I asked him what happened and started getting scared. He suddenly came to me while I was deeply involved in my studies and started telling me something.”
The Reason? Madhuri Dixit Had Got Married
The mystery was finally unraveled when Pankaj, after much prodding, asked Mundhe if he had read the morning newspaper. Mundhe confirmed he had, but initially failed to grasp the connection between the news and his friend’s distress.
It was then that Pankaj delivered the surprising revelation. “He said, ‘Hey, Madhuri got married!’ I said, ‘So what?’ Then he replied, ‘Madhuri Dixit…’” Mundhe recounted, eliciting laughter from the audience. What Mundhe had perceived as a grave personal crisis turned out to be his friend’s deeply felt reaction to the news of the beloved actress’s nuptials.
Madhuri Dixit, at the peak of her career as one of Hindi cinema’s biggest female stars, married cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Shriram Nene in 1999. Her filmography at the time included blockbusters such as “Tezaab,” “Dil,” “Beta,” “Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!” and “Dil To Pagal Hai.”

However, Mundhe, with a twinkle in his eye, decided against a public disclosure. “As for who I liked, I won’t dare to reveal that right now. My married life is going smoothly,” he quipped, once again drawing appreciative laughter from the audience.
