Amazon Quietly Hikes Prices Across Major Hardware Lineup Amid Component Shortages
The global semiconductor crisis continues to claim high-profile victims, with Amazon becoming the latest tech giant to pass rising production costs on to consumers. Without a formal announcement, the e-commerce titan has implemented significant price increases across its core hardware ecosystem, including Echo, Fire TV, Kindle, and eero devices.
The price adjustments, which were first reported by Fortune, reflect a broader industry trend where companies are struggling to absorb the surging costs of memory and storage components. For many shoppers, the news serves as an unwelcome surprise, with some devices seeing price jumps of up to 60 percent.
A Broad Sweep of Increases
The impact of these hikes is widespread, affecting both entry-level devices and high-end hardware. The base-model Echo Dot, a staple in many smart homes, saw one of the most dramatic percentage increases, jumping from $50 to $80. Larger smart home displays were not spared either; the Echo Show 21 has seen its price tag climb from $400 to $500.
Amazon’s digital reading and streaming lineup also saw notable adjustments:
- Kindle (16GB): Increased from $110 to $150.
- Kindle Paperwhite (16GB): Increased from $160 to $200.
- Fire TV Stick 4K Max: Rose from $60 to $85.
- Fire TV Stick HD: Saw a more modest increase from $35 to $40.
The company’s mesh Wi-Fi division, eero, also saw its pricing structure shift, with the 3-pack of the eero 7 increasing by $50 to a new price of $400, while the eero Pro 7 3-pack rose by $100 to $800. Notably, Amazon’s Ring security products appear to have remained untouched by this wave of price revisions.
Addressing the "RAMaggeddon" Reality
An Amazon spokesperson confirmed the changes to Fortune, explicitly attributing the decision to "significant increases in memory and storage component costs." Despite the hikes, the representative maintained that Amazon remains committed to providing "accessible prices" and intends to continue offering promotional discounts throughout the calendar year to mitigate the impact on budget-conscious shoppers.
Amazon’s move comes as part of a larger, systemic shift in the consumer electronics industry, often referred to as "RAMaggeddon." As chip supply constraints persist, manufacturers are increasingly forced to re-evaluate their profit margins. Earlier this summer, Apple introduced similar price increases across its MacBook and iPad lineups, while Roku implemented hardware price hikes of up to $50 in July.
As Amazon devices are the latest casualties of the memory shortage price hikes, consumers looking to upgrade their home tech may need to be more strategic about their purchases, waiting for the seasonal sales and promotions the company has promised to continue.
