Firearms officers were called to an “ongoing incident” in Wrexham city centre earlier today. A heavy police presence was in the area.
A North Wales Police Wrexham town statement said: “We are currently dealing with an ongoing police incident in Wrexham city centre.
“As a result, there is a heavy police presence in the area, including authorised firearms officers as a precautionary measure. We will share further information in due course.”

North Wales Police have also released this additional statement:
Several schools and nurseries within the city centre area went into lockdown this morning for a short period as a precautionary measure.Officers are now attending those locations to advise the incident has concluded, and there is no risk to the public.

A spokesperson said:
“Searches were carried out in the Wrexham area this morning to identify an individual following reports of suspicious behaviour, shortly after 8.41am today, 14 May.
“The individual was identified and located near to the Maelor Hospital where he was spoken to by officers. Concerns were found to be well intentioned but unfounded.
Assistant Chief Constable Nicholas Evans said: “I understand the increased policing presence in the Wrexham area this morning may have been unsettling and caused alarm among the community.
I would like to reassure members of the public that the individual was identified, and concerns were found to be well intentioned but unfounded. Officers will remain visible in the area today for reassurance purposes.
“Thank you to those who reported the incident to police and to the public for their patience while we dealt with the incident, which has now concluded.”
A statement attributed to Ysgol Plas Coch in Wrexham, earlier said the school had been placed into partial lockdown. The statement said:
We have had to put the school into a partial lockdown this morning on the advice of the police. All the pupils and staff are safe in the building. Could you please not try to contact the school nor come here so that we can keep the phone lines clear and as no one is allowed in or out of the school grounds. We will update with with any further information once we have it.
We have asked Wrexham County Borough Council for comment.
There were unconfirmed reports a police heliopter may have been up over the city earlier. We will bring you more as we get details.
