Banks closed tomorrow: Why branches will remain shut in Tripura on August 19

Banks in Tripura to Observe Holiday on August 19 for Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur’s Birthday

Agartala, Tripura – Banking services in Tripura are set to be affected on Wednesday, August 19th, as financial institutions across the state will observe a holiday in commemoration of the birthday of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur. This regional observance means that all bank branches within Tripura will remain closed for the day, impacting customers who rely on in-person banking services.

It is important for the public to note that this holiday is specific to Tripura and does not apply to banks nationwide. India’s banking holiday calendar is decentralized, with closures often dictated by regional festivals and local historical observances. Therefore, while customers in Tripura will find their bank branches shut, banking operations will proceed as usual in other states where August 19th is not recognized as a bank holiday.

Customers planning to visit a bank branch in Tripura for transactions such as cash deposits or withdrawals, cheque processing, or demand draft issuance are advised to complete these activities in advance or postpone them until Thursday, August 20th.

Upcoming Bank Holidays Across India

Beyond the immediate closure in Tripura, several other bank holidays are scheduled across various Indian states throughout August. These holidays reflect the diverse cultural and religious landscape of the country.

  • August 25th: Banks in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh will observe a holiday for Milad-Un-Nabi/First Onam/Milad-i-Sherif (Birthday of Prophet Muhammed).
  • August 26th: A more widespread closure is anticipated on this day for Id-E-Milad/Baravafat/Milad-un-Nabi (Birthday of Prophet Mohammad)/Thiruvonam. This will affect banks in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Telangana, Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Delhi, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand.
  • August 28th: Banks in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Himachal Pradesh will be closed for various observances including Raksha Bandhan/Pang-Lhabsol/Friday following Eid-i-Milad-ul-Nabi/Sree Narayana Guru Jayanthi/Ayyankali Jayanthi.

In addition to these specific dates, it’s a standing rule that banks across India remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month, as per the Reserve Bank of India’s holiday guidelines.

Alternative Banking Services Remain Available

Despite bank branch closures, customers should remember that essential banking services remain accessible through digital channels. A bank holiday primarily impacts physical branch operations. Services such as internet banking, mobile banking applications, Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), and Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platforms will continue to function seamlessly. These digital avenues allow for fund transfers, bill payments, account inquiries, and various other transactions, ensuring that customers do not have to put all their banking needs on hold.

However, for any transactions that explicitly require a physical visit to a bank branch, such as depositing large sums of cash, obtaining demand drafts, or addressing specific account issues with a bank representative, customers are advised to plan accordingly and complete these tasks before the holiday or wait until the branches reopen.
