Justin Chatwin Reflects on Hayden Panettiere’s Struggles and "Beautiful Heart" Following Her Untimely Passing

The entertainment world is reeling from the sudden loss of actress Hayden Panettiere, who passed away on August 16th. In the wake of this tragic news, actor Justin Chatwin, who co-starred with Panettiere in her final film before her passing, has shared poignant insights into their working relationship and Panettiere’s personal battles.

Chatwin, known for his roles in "Shameless" and "War of the Worlds," recently spoke to PEOPLE magazine about his experience collaborating with the "Nashville" star. He revealed that their last film together, a project centered on domestic abuse, resonated deeply with Panettiere. "We hit it off great, and it was an awesome shoot," Chatwin stated. "But it was about domestic abuse, and it was subject matter that may have hit close to home, because she did mention it. She opened up to me about a lot of things."

He also noted a significant change in Panettiere since their initial meeting years ago during her "Heroes" days. "Hayden seemed different when I met her this time than when I met her in the early years," Chatwin observed. Having been sober for 15 years himself, Chatwin expressed a profound understanding of the challenges faced by individuals battling addiction within the demanding environment of Hollywood. "I’ve been sober for 15 years, so I know this world of addiction and Hollywood—it takes, and it takes from youth.”

Chatwin further conveyed a sense of loneliness and struggle that he perceived in Panettiere during their time together on set. "I could tell she was struggling, and I was like, ‘I don’t think it’s this movie.’ There’s a handful of women that I’ve worked with that I really liked, and I really loved working with her, but I also know that she was really lonely," he shared.

Despite her evident struggles, Chatwin emphasized Panettiere’s genuine kindness and authenticity once the cameras stopped rolling. While acknowledging that actors are "trained to be on" during filming, he found immense value in the moments when Panettiere let her guard down. "She had a beautiful heart," Chatwin affirmed. "But we’re trained to be on, and I really liked spending time with her because she took that off, and she was authentic with me about her life, and she opened up about her struggles with addiction. And who knows where it comes from? Does it come from Hollywood? Does it come from home? And a lot of times, it’s both.”

Panettiere had taken a hiatus from acting in 2018 after completing her work on the acclaimed show "Nashville." She made a highly anticipated return to the big screen in 2023 with the "Scream" franchise and had three additional films in various stages of production. Earlier this year, she also released a memoir, offering a candid account of her battles with depression, addiction, and postpartum issues following the birth of her daughter, Kaya. In her memoir, Panettiere also openly discussed her bisexuality, expressing a profound desire to live a full and meaningful life.

Justin Chatwin’s heartfelt reflections paint a picture of a talented actress who, beneath her professional demeanor, grappled with significant personal challenges. His insights offer a glimpse into the complexities of fame and the profound impact of addiction, while simultaneously honoring the "beautiful heart" of a departed colleague.
