Dream Debut Turns to Heartbreak for Indian Mixed Doubles Pair at World Championships

New Delhi, India – In a dramatic turn of events, Indian mixed doubles pair Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh made a whirlwind 1,800-kilometer dash from the Karnataka State Senior Championships to debut at the BWF World Championships in New Delhi. However, their dream opportunity ultimately ended in a heartbreaking golden point defeat against Turkey’s Emre Sonmez and Yasemin Bektas.

The journey for Surya and Pramuthesh began unexpectedly. As the second seeds in the Karnataka State Senior Championships in Dharwad, they had just exited the quarter-finals in a nail-biting encounter when a phone call changed their trajectory. They were informed of last-minute withdrawals at the Delhi World Championships, opening up a coveted spot for them as reserves.

"We were playing the state championships, but this was more important. We are happy to debut, and we couldn’t miss this chance. It’s like a dream come true for us," a beaming Surya stated on Tuesday, reflecting on their hasty decision to drop everything and seize the opportunity. Pramuthesh echoed his sentiment, adding, "I think this is what we have dreamt about. We never thought we would get entry for this. So, as soon as we got the news, we were just very happy."

Arriving in New Delhi just the evening before the competition, the Indian duo, ranked 149th in the world, were thrust onto Court 3 on the second day of the tournament. What followed was an epic 73-minute battle against their Turkish opponents.

The match proved to be a rollercoaster of emotions. Sonmez and Bektas claimed the first set 21-16. However, Surya and Pramuthesh fought back valiantly in the second set, holding an astonishing six match points. Despite their relentless efforts, they couldn’t convert, and the set stretched into a historic moment for the tournament.

The second set witnessed the first instance of a ‘golden point’ at the ongoing BWF World Championships. This rule, introduced in 2006 to break ties when neither team can establish a two-point advantage, was invoked for the first time in 11 years at this prestigious event. After an extended exchange, the Turkish pair managed to snatch the second set 30-29, levelling the match.

The tension escalated into the deciding third set, where the Indian pair once again found themselves with a match point opportunity. Yet, destiny had a different plan. Sonmez and Bektas held their nerve, ultimately securing the victory with a final score of 24-22 in the third set, leaving the Indian debutants with a mixture of pride and palpable disappointment.

Reflecting on their narrow loss, a composed Pramuthesh acknowledged the experience, stating, "I mean, we are happy that we have played this well, but there are some takeaways we will focus on. Like when we have match points, we have to play safe, just hit inside, just focus on a few easy points, not anything extra or trying to take a quick point. Just those small things."

While their World Championships debut ended in a heart-wrenching defeat, the remarkable journey of Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh from state championships reserves to the global stage has undoubtedly captured the imagination of badminton enthusiasts. Their resilience and the valuable lessons learned from this "golden point heartbreak" will undoubtedly fuel their ambition for future competitions.
