Niki Walia Reveals Near Miss with ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ Role, Sheds Light on Industry Casting Decisions
Mumbai, India – Veteran actress Niki Walia has recently opened up about a significant "what if" in her career, revealing that she was initially approached and extensively considered for the role of Neelam Mehra in Zoya Akhtar’s acclaimed 2015 film, ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’. The character, ultimately portrayed by Shefali Shah, was, according to Walia, almost hers, with the casting process having progressed to an advanced stage before a last-minute change.
In a candid conversation with Buzzzooka Prime, Walia detailed the elaborate lengths to which the filmmakers went to secure her for the part. "Zoya Akhtar had specially flown me in from the UK for this," Walia stated, highlighting the initial commitment from the production team. She further elaborated on the advanced stage of the casting, recounting, "It came right up to this point, and then it was taken away from me. They must have had their reasons. But my cruise dates were all fixed. Everything was done."
The actress painted a vivid picture of how close she was to joining the star-studded cast. "We did the scene readings, everything. They were okay with it. They even took my passport. The dates were booked too," she explained, emphasizing the logistical preparations that had been made. Walia was on the verge of returning to the UK to prepare her family for her extended absence, anticipating a two-to-three-month cruise shoot.
However, the plans took an unexpected turn. "The day before I was leaving, Zoya called me and said, ‘Niki, I am really sorry, but because of an internal decision, we are not going ahead with you,’" Walia recalled. Despite the evident disappointment, she expressed a philosophical acceptance of the situation. "I always have this thought that I wish I had got that role. But it’s okay. What doesn’t happen, doesn’t happen. What is meant to be is what is meant to be." Walia was quick to clarify that she harbors no ill will towards Zoya Akhtar or the production team, acknowledging that such last-minute changes are sometimes part of the industry’s unpredictability.
Reflecting on the reasons behind the casting change, Walia offered her perspective, believing it ultimately boiled down to a creative decision. She speculated that the makers might have perceived her screen presence as too strong for the character they envisioned, opting for someone who could project a more vulnerable image. "I felt I was completely suited to the character, but I think they made that decision creatively because they may have felt that, between my personality and Shefali’s, I perhaps came across as stronger," Walia mused.
She further elaborated on her interpretation: "They may have felt that the wife needed to appear like someone who could appear vulnerable. Maybe because that is also Shefali ji’s zone – she does sentimental roles and vulnerable characters. So it was a creative decision. Who am I to question it?" Despite her understanding, Walia admitted to a lingering sense of regret over the missed opportunity, stating that it remains a role she wishes she had played.
‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ went on to become a critically and commercially successful film, boasting an ensemble cast including Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma, and Farhan Akhtar. Walia’s revelation offers a fascinating glimpse into the intricate and often unpredictable world of film casting, where even the most well-laid plans can change at a moment’s notice, driven by creative vision and internal decisions.
