From unforgettable England moments to a dramatic FIFA World Cup Final between Spain and Argentina, millions of people came together this summer on the BBC to experience football’s biggest tournament.

Whether watching live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, following every nail-biting moment on the BBC Sport website and app, listening to Football Daily, enjoying second screen innovations like the 3D experience, or joining the conversation across social media, audiences made this a record-breaking event across the BBC.

Across the whole tournament, the BBC saw an overall reach of 42.8 million across TV viewing and audiences streamed World Cup matches 237 million times on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app, more than double the 2022 World Cup. Football fever dominated BBC iPlayer, with World Cup content accounting for 33% of everything streamed during the competition.

Viewers also embraced the very best viewing experience, with 29.6 million UHD streams across the tournament, over three times more the World Cup in 2022.

But this summer wasn’t just about the 90 minutes.

From the first whistle to the final trophy lift, BBC Sport was with audiences around the clock. Fans turned to the BBC before kick-off, throughout every match and long after the final whistle for breaking news, live pages, tactical analysis, interviews, podcasts, explainers, highlights and behind-the-scenes stories.

The appetite for that coverage was unprecedented. On 6 July, England’s dramatic Round of 16 victory over Mexico drove 15 million unique visitors to the BBC Sport website and app, making it the biggest day ever across both platforms. England’s journey to the semi-finals also helped deliver the biggest live television audience since 2021 across any broadcaster with a peak of 24 million on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, while the victory over Mexico became the biggest day ever on record for BBC iPlayer (46 million requests for content) and BBC Sport’s social video views (330 million views).

The BBC Sport website and app played a central role in keeping audiences informed throughout the World Cup. It attracted 57.2 million unique visitors, with fans viewing BBC Sport content 1.7 billion times, demonstrating the immense appetite for trusted, accessible coverage of one of the world’s biggest sporting events.

Football fans have streamed FIFA World Cup 2026 match highlights 67.3 million times across BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app, underlining the BBC’s ability to bring audiences content in the way they want and when they want it. The most watched highlights package was the dramatic Mexico v England clash, which attracted 4.3 million streams.

Innovation also brought fans even closer to the action. Millions explored BBC Sport’s interactive 3D match experience, using it almost 5 million times throughout the tournament, as well as its World Cup Predictor game which was used 1.9 million times.

Audiences also flocked to the BBC’s new BBC Football YouTube Channel, which generated 100 million views across a diverse range of content, including match highlights, expert analysis and exclusive digital formats. Among its standout successes was a first of its kind watch-along with the YouTube collective, the Sidemen, reaching new and younger audiences.

Away from the live matches, Football Daily became one of the tournament’s defining success stories, generating more than 7.3 million streams, including over 3.4 million views for its visualised editions on BBC iPlayer and BBC Football YouTube.

Across social media, clips, interviews, analysis, press conferences and fan moments attracted 2.55 billion video views, showing audiences’ appetite to stay connected to the tournament wherever they were. The top performing video of the 2026 World Cup was Mostafa Zico’s post-match interview after Egypt went out to Argentina with 77 million views on TikTok alone.

Alex Kay-Jelski, Director of BBC Sport, says: “This has been a World Cup we’ll never forget, and that’s entirely down to the millions of people who chose to experience it with the BBC.

Thank you to everyone who watched, streamed, listened, read, shared and joined us throughout the tournament. Whether you were watching at home, following on your phone during the working day, catching up on Football Daily or diving into our new interactive experiences, you made this a summer of football that brought the nation together.

Our ambition was to be there for audiences every step of the way, not just during the matches, but every hour in between. We wanted to tell the stories behind the tournament, bring fans closer to the biggest moments and innovate in ways that made the experience richer than ever before. The response has been extraordinary, and we’re incredibly grateful that so many people made the BBC part of their World Cup.”

This summer’s FIFA World Cup has become a huge milestone for BBC Sport, with record audiences across television, streaming, digital, audio and social media. More importantly, it showed the enduring power of free-to-air sport to unite millions of people around shared moments, unforgettable memories and a love of the game”.
