Behind NDTV India’s teaser campaign, a bigger Hindi news play?


New Delhi: NDTV India’s recent teaser communications have set off speculation that the channel may be preparing a larger Hindi news move from 8 pm on Wednesday.

The creative communication creates intrigue, changes faces, and still stops short of naming what it is.

Could the larger play involve the addition of a big face to its programming line-up?

This may involve an entirely new programme built around the new face, a source said.

More recently, the channel also added Syed Suhel from Republic Bharat to its primetime line-up, which has only added to speculation that the current teasers may be pointing to a sharper primetime push.

However, the teaser campaign does not immediately point to a simple outside hire or a one-for-one replacement.

At this stage, there are not enough clues to say exactly what will be unveiled. It could still be a new anchor-led property. It could also be a refreshed editorial format for an existing proposition.

Over the past year, NDTV has launched multiple IPs, including music-led properties around artists such as AR Rahman and Honey Singh. 

NDTV India has, for the past few months, been claiming leadership in the Hindi news genre on YouTube in the group’s own promotions. Even if the current teaser is built around television and primetime, digital may still remain central to the eventual play.

But the campaign’s rhythm suggests that NDTV India wants the reveal to land as a bigger reset in how its Hindi news offering is being presented to the market, especially advertisers and media agencies.

The targeted communication to the trade is a clear indication that the channel wants to use the moment to remind the market of the trust and credibility associated with the NDTV India brand.

That remains one of the strongest differentiators for legacy television news brands in a media environment crowded with social media noise and low-entry digital commentary.

Whether the final reveal is a new face, a new format or a wider editorial repackaging, the teaser suggests NDTV India wants the move to be read as a statement of intent.
