Big Blow for South Africa! Kagiso Rabada likely to miss Australia Test series with Hamstring Injury | Cricket News

Major Blow for Proteas: Kagiso Rabada Ruled Out of Australia Test Series

South Africa’s preparations for their upcoming high-stakes Test series against Australia have been dealt a severe blow. Premier fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has been ruled out of the entire three-match campaign after sustaining a significant Grade 3 tear in his right hamstring.

The injury, which occurred during the star pacer’s winter conditioning programme, is expected to sideline him for approximately 10 weeks. The unfortunate development confirms that Rabada will miss the start of the Test series, which is scheduled to kick off in Durban on October 9.

Donald Confirms Absence

The news was officially corroborated by legendary South African fast bowler and current Lions bowling coach, Allan Donald. Speaking to the South African media outlet News24 on Sunday, Donald confirmed that the setback would keep the speedster out for the duration of the contests against the Australians.

“He’s going to be out for all the Aussie Tests as well,” Donald stated, effectively ending speculation regarding a potential early return.

The series is a pivotal one for the Proteas, consisting of three Tests followed by a three-match ODI series, which begins in Durban on September 24. Subsequent Tests are slated for Gqeberha (October 18) and Cape Town (October 27).

Navigating a Pace-Bowling Crisis

Rabada’s absence leaves a gaping void in the South African bowling attack. As one of the most prolific wicket-takers in modern cricket, his ability to trouble top-order batsmen will be sorely missed. With 340 wickets in 73 Tests, his pedigree is undeniable—most notably his stellar performance in the 2025 World Test Championship final at Lord’s, where he dismantled the opposition with match figures of 9-110. Furthermore, his historical dominance over Australia—averaging 21.39 across 11 Tests with 58 wickets—underscores just how difficult he is to replace.

In his wake, the South African selectors are expected to lean on a younger core of fast bowlers. Gerald Coetzee, Corbin Bosch, and rising sensation Kwena Maphaka are now set to shoulder significantly more responsibility to bridge the gap.

Compounding the selection headache, the team is also closely monitoring the fitness of Nandre Burger. The left-arm pacer is currently in the midst of rehabilitation for a stress fracture in his back. While the injury is concerning, there remains a glimmer of hope within the camp that he could regain fitness in time to bolster the bowling unit for the Test series.

For the Proteas, the next few weeks will be critical as they look to reconfigure their strategy and find the depth required to remain competitive against a formidable Australian side in the absence of their pace spearhead.
