Body of Teenager Recovered After Tragic Drowning in Delhi Drain
NEW DELHI — The desperate search for a 15-year-old boy who went missing after falling into an open drain in Southeast Delhi’s Jasola area has come to a heartbreaking end. Authorities confirmed on Monday that the teenager’s body has been recovered, four days after he disappeared while chasing a kite.
The incident, which occurred just before noon on Saturday, has sparked public outrage and highlighted critical lapses in urban infrastructure maintenance. The victim, a Class 8 student, had been playing near the open drain when he accidentally slipped and was swept away by the swift, dark waters.
A Father’s Desperate Search
The tragedy gained national attention after harrowing footage circulated on social media, showing the boy’s father frantically sifting through piles of filth and debris in the drain in a desperate attempt to locate his son.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Saurabh Bharadwaj shared the footage, noting the father’s anguish as he scoured the toxic waters, hoping against hope to find the teenager. “Father is unable to find his 15-year-old son… The father desperately jumped into the drain to find his son,” Bharadwaj stated.
Multi-Agency Rescue Efforts
Following the alert at 11:54 a.m. on Saturday, Delhi Fire Services (DFS) deployed two fire tenders and a dedicated rescue team to the site. However, the operation proved exceptionally challenging due to the heavy volume and rapid flow of water within the drain, which hampered the rescue efforts.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was subsequently called in to assist, utilizing specialized equipment to navigate the dangerous conditions. Despite a massive, multi-agency effort that continued through the weekend with the deployment of divers, the boy could not be found until days later.
Accountability and Administrative Action
In the wake of the tragedy, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has moved to hold officials accountable. A junior engineer from the South East (Central) Zone has been suspended for alleged dereliction of duty. The civic body confirmed that disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against the officer.
While the drain was initially believed to be under the jurisdiction of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), officials later clarified that maintenance responsibilities had been transferred to the MCD.
The recovery of the teenager’s body serves as a grim reminder of the persistent dangers posed by uncovered urban drainage systems. The drowning has prompted renewed calls for immediate safety audits of open storm-water drains across the capital to prevent future loss of life.
