Boston West Academy has been named the winner of the Waste Free Lunch Challenge 2026 after achieving an outstanding result in this year’s competition.
The fun competition run by Lincolnshire Energy from Waste Facility, which is operated by FCC Environment, aims to encourage a friendly competition between visiting schools to reduce the amount of packaging and food waste in their lunchboxes. The competition is run throughout the year with the school producing the least amount of waste being announced winners.
Across the year, students from Boston West Academy produced just 400 grams of general and food waste from the lunchboxes of 27 pupils – an average of less than 15 grams per student making them the winning school for the second year in a row. This achievement demonstrates the pupils’ commitment to reducing waste and making environmentally responsible choices every day.

By choosing reusable containers, refillable drinks bottles and reducing single-use packaging, pupils can dramatically cut the amount of waste they generate. The challenge helps young people develop sustainable habits and shows how small actions can make a big difference for the environment.
FCC Environment’s Education and Administration Manager, Sally Hood, congratulated both the pupils and staff for their dedication and enthusiasm.
“Producing less than 15 grams of waste per pupil is an excellent achievement. The students at Boston West Academy have shown that simple changes can make a real difference. Their success demonstrates a fantastic understanding of waste reduction and environmental responsibility. We would like to congratulate everyone involved on this well-deserved win.”
The school have received a framed certificate in recognition of their achievement, celebrating the hard work of both the pupils and the wider school community.
By taking part in the Waste Free Lunch Challenge, schools across Lincolnshire are helping to reduce waste, encourage sustainable habits, and inspire the next generation of environmentally conscious citizens.
