Labour MP Sam Carling has publicly called on Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to step down, declaring that Labour is “not going far enough” and needs a new direction to deliver meaningful change.
In a strongly worded statement, the North West Cambridgeshire MP said he was elected in July 2024 on a “promise of change” but believes the government is failing to match its ambition with delivery.
“Change Is Needed”
Carling said communities across his constituency continue to face major challenges including the cost of living crisis, insecure housing, poor transport access, ageing infrastructure and struggling public services.
While praising achievements made under Starmer’s leadership, he warned Labour was failing to communicate its successes and was losing momentum.

He said: “Change is needed, and I have sadly come to the conclusion that Sir Keir Starmer is not the right person to lead that change.”
Growing Pressure Inside Labour
Carling also revealed he is joining Labour colleagues from across the UK in urging the Prime Minister to resign “for the sake of our movement and the people we serve”.
The MP warned that although Labour had made “so much progress”, continuing on its current path would threaten the party’s future success.
