Rs 2,077 Crore Infrastructure Boost: Strategic Siliguri Corridor Set for Major Upgrade
NEW DELHI – In a significant move to fortify India’s national security and regional economic integration, the Union government has approved a massive Rs 2,077.18-crore project to upgrade the strategic Siliguri Corridor. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced the initiative on Thursday, marking a pivotal development for connectivity in the eastern and northeastern parts of the country.
A Strategic Lifeline
The project involves the four-laning of a 31.02-km stretch of National Highway (NH-327), connecting Bagdogra in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district to Galgalia in Bihar’s Kishanganj.
The Siliguri Corridor, often referred to as the “Chicken’s Neck,” is a narrow, 20-km-wide strip of land that serves as the sole land bridge connecting mainland India to its eight northeastern states. By enhancing this critical artery, the government aims to secure the logistical backbone of the Northeast while simultaneously streamlining international transit toward Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh.
Eco-Conscious Infrastructure
Beyond mere transit capacity, the project integrates modern engineering with environmental responsibility. According to Minister Gadkari, the approved plan features:
- Three major bridges and a road over bridge to facilitate seamless traffic flow.
- Five dedicated elephant underpasses, ensuring the safe migration of wildlife through the region’s sensitive ecological zones.
- Comprehensive service roads on both sides of the highway to manage local traffic and reduce congestion.
Economic Impact
The upgrade is expected to be a game-changer for North Bengal’s economy. By alleviating gridlock in key transit hubs such as Bagdogra, Naxalbari, Kharibari, and Panitanki, the highway will significantly improve access to Bagdogra Airport.
Furthermore, the project promises to boost the region’s agricultural and industrial output. Farmers and producers of tea, timber, and horticultural goods will gain faster, more reliable access to domestic and international markets. This aligns with the government’s broader vision of promoting the “Triple-T” sectors—tea, timber, and tourism—to stimulate industrial growth across North Bengal.
