Capcom Promises Parity for Onimusha: Way of the Sword on Nintendo Switch 2

Fans anticipating the revival of Capcom’s beloved samurai action franchise can breathe a sigh of relief. According to the developers behind the upcoming Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 version will offer an experience remarkably consistent with its PlayStation 5 counterpart.

In a recent interview with Japanese gaming outlet Famitsu, producer Akihito Kadowaki and director Satoru Nihei addressed technical concerns regarding the port. Despite initial development hurdles, the team is confident that the latest Nintendo hardware holds its own against more powerful consoles.

Bridging the Performance Gap

When asked about the quality of the port, Kadowaki noted that the development team managed to optimize the game so effectively that players might struggle to distinguish it from the current-gen version.

"I think we made it really well, so well you may not even be able to feel a difference," Kadowaki stated. "Honestly speaking, we only started working on a Switch 2 version partway through development, but based on how playtesting felt, we thought, ‘This really could compete with the other platforms.’"

While the team acknowledged that the PS5 version maintains a higher frame rate—typically targeting 60 FPS compared to the 30 FPS cap on the Switch 2—Kadowaki emphasized that the lower frame rate does not diminish the quality of the combat. "We feel that either is enough to be able to really enjoy and taste the action," he added.

The "Bedside" Advantage

Beyond raw performance, Director Satoru Nihei highlighted a distinct advantage that the Nintendo Switch 2 holds over static home consoles: the hybrid form factor.

"The ease of playing while in handheld mode became a talking point amongst the development staff," Nihei remarked. "Being able to fully play the game while laying down in bed is simply incredible, right?"

This sentiment aligns with Capcom’s recent track record of delivering high-quality ports for Nintendo hardware, including titles like Resident Evil and the upcoming Pragmata. The developer’s ability to bring these visually demanding projects to mobile-capable hardware underscores the increased power of Nintendo’s next-generation console.

Earlier Release Date

Good news arrived for eager fans as well: Onimusha: Way of the Sword has received a release date shift. The game is now slated to launch on September 4, 2026, arriving slightly ahead of its previously announced September 25 window.

As excitement builds, the industry continues to monitor how Capcom talks Onimusha: Way of the Sword and handles the transition to the Switch 2, proving that portable gaming no longer requires a significant compromise in visual fidelity or gameplay depth.
