Johnson County Business Roundup: Local Milestone, Relocations, and Awards

From honoring long-standing community institutions to celebrating the growth of emerging local retailers, the Johnson County business landscape is buzzing with activity. Here is the latest update on regional business news.

Greenwood’s Back Door Quilts Honored with State Award

A staple of the Greenwood community for over five decades, Back Door Quilts was recently honored with the Governor’s Half Century Business Award. This prestigious accolade recognizes Indiana organizations that have maintained continuous operation for at least 50 years while demonstrating a steadfast commitment to community service.

Founded in 1973 by Linda Hale and a group of neighborhood friends, the business later saw Teri Dougherty join the leadership team to help steer its growth. Over the last 51 years, the company has evolved from a small neighborhood endeavor into a sprawling 6,000-square-foot destination. Today, the shop serves as a hub for quilting enthusiasts, offering a wide array of supplies, educational classes, and community clubs. Its reputation extends well beyond Johnson County; in 2005, the shop earned national acclaim when it was named one of the "10 Top Shops" by American Patchwork and Quilting’s Quilt Sampler magazine.

Mom’s Time-Out Corner Announces Relocation to Franklin

In other retail news, Mom’s Time-Out Corner is preparing for a high-profile move. Currently located at 39 S. U.S. 31 in Whiteland, the eclectic shop is set to relocate to the heart of downtown Franklin on Sept. 1.

The business will take over a space in the recently renovated former funeral home located at the intersection of Jefferson Street and Home Avenue. Founded in June by Allison Baird—who also serves as the face of the Rendered Radiance skincare line—the shop serves as a marketplace for a diverse range of local vendors. Customers can expect to find a curated selection of clothing, home decor, specialty cooking supplies, and artisanal goods such as fresh bread and local honey. The Whiteland storefront will remain open through the end of August before transitioning operations to the new Franklin location.

Nominations Open for 2026 ‘Best of the Southside’ Contest

The community now has an opportunity to support their favorite local shops and service providers as the Daily Journal has officially opened nominations for its annual Best of the Southside contest.

This year’s competition invites readers to weigh in on dozens of categories, ranging from healthcare and home services to dining, retail, and professional services. If a specific niche isn’t listed, the nomination process even allows for the addition of new categories.

“It is a fantastic way for the community to highlight the businesses that make Johnson County unique,” organizers noted.

Nominations are open through Aug. 27. Following the nomination phase, the top candidates will move on to a public voting round running from Sept. 2 through Sept. 27. Winners will be unveiled on Nov. 28. Business owners interested in promoting their candidacy can visit the contest website to download a free media kit designed to help drive community engagement and support.
