Multi-Agency Rescue Underway After Cargo Vessel Sinks Off India’s East Coast

A massive search and rescue operation is currently underway in the Bay of Bengal following the sinking of the Panama-flagged cargo ship Ocean Winner off the eastern coast of India.

The incident occurred approximately 240 nautical miles (444 kilometers) off the coast of Odisha state. According to reports, the vessel was transporting a cargo of iron ore from the Paradip port in India to Singapore when it encountered distress.

Multinational Crew in Peril

At the time of the sinking, there were 24 crew members on board. The composition of the crew reflects the international nature of the maritime industry, consisting of 20 Chinese nationals, three sailors from Myanmar, and one Bangladeshi national.

While the exact cause of the sinking remains unknown, officials confirmed that at least two sailors have been rescued. The search for the remaining 22 crew members is being treated with the utmost urgency.

Joint Rescue Effort

The Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Navy have launched a coordinated joint operation to locate the missing sailors. According to Sanjay Negi, a representative of the Paradip police, vessels operating in the vicinity of the accident site have been diverted to assist in the search, bolstering the efforts of the official rescue teams.
