According to Aviation Director Tony Vicari, the airport processed 57,268 passengers in August alone, a 3% increase over the same month in 2025. This milestone marks the 32nd consecutive month in which the airport has set a new individual monthly high, reinforcing a streak of continuous growth that began in 2023.
While the airport remains in a period of sustained expansion, data suggests the pace of growth is beginning to stabilize. After experiencing double-digit percentage increases annually since 2023, the airport saw growth rates for July and August settle at roughly 3%. “July and August were slightly lower year-over-year growth rates than what we’ve been seeing over the last several years—still representing all-time highs in traffic,” Vicari said.
Despite the cooling in momentum, the year-to-date passenger numbers are currently up 10% compared to 2025. Vicari anticipates that this annual percentage will likely drift lower as travel demand typically softens toward the end of the year. He described the current shift as a transition from the unprecedented, high-velocity growth of the post-pandemic era toward a more sustainable, long-term trajectory.
“This will probably be the first year since 2022 where we’ve seen a non-double-digit growth period,” Vicari noted. “That’s not to reflect on any sort of major challenge or issue, but rather just that we’re seeing that growth trajectory start to potentially drop slightly off the kind of historic levels we saw from 2023 through 2025.”
Beyond total volume, the composition of passengers has also returned to pre-pandemic norms. Data from the first eight months of the year indicates that 50% of airport traffic is comprised of visitors from outside the region, while 40% consists of local residents from the Four Corners area. The remaining 10% is divided between seasonal residents and student travel—a breakdown remarkably similar to the airport’s pre-COVID demographics in 2018 and 2019.
This consistent traffic supports a substantial economic engine for the region. The most recent economic impact study, based on 2025 data, valued the airport’s contribution at $340 million annually. Vicari emphasized that by providing reliable daily service to multiple hubs, the airport continues to successfully combat “passenger leakage,” encouraging locals to fly out of Durango rather than traveling to more distant facilities like Albuquerque.
