Dalal Street Braces for High-Stakes Week as GDP Data and Global Cues Take Center Stage

Dalal Street is preparing for a pivotal week, with a heavy calendar of domestic economic indicators and crucial international labor reports expected to dictate market sentiment. Following a slight retreat in the previous session, investors are closely monitoring a convergence of factors that could set the tone for September.

Domestic Triggers: Growth in the Spotlight

The centerpiece of the domestic week is the release of India’s Q1 FY27 GDP data, scheduled for August 31. This report is highly anticipated, as it will provide a definitive pulse on the nation’s economic momentum amidst a complex global backdrop of volatile energy prices and ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

“The coming week is expected to remain highly eventful,” noted Ajit Mishra, SVP of Research at Religare Broking Ltd. In addition to GDP figures, market participants are keeping a watchful eye on several other vital indicators:

  • Economic Pulse: August manufacturing and services PMI readings.
  • Fiscal Metrics: GST collections and foreign exchange reserve levels.
  • Currency Dynamics: The movement of the rupee against the US dollar.
  • Sectoral Performance: Monthly auto sales data and the latest trends in Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI) flows.

The FPI momentum remains a key point of interest, with investors having poured Rs 30,919 crore into Indian equities throughout August, marking a two-month buying streak.

The Global Catalyst: US Jobs Data

While domestic data remains central to the narrative, global market sentiment will be heavily influenced by the US August non-farm payrolls report, due on September 4.

The employment data is expected to be the ultimate litmus test for the Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy path. Following hawkish commentary from key officials at the Jackson Hole symposium, investors are eager to see if the US labor market data justifies a more aggressive or tempered approach to interest rates in September.

Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, emphasized the significance of this shift: “US monetary policy has become the dominant global catalyst. Markets will look to the jobs report to determine whether expectations for a September rate hike will solidify or ease.”

Market Context

The domestic benchmarks enter the new week aiming to recover from recent losses. Both the BSE Sensex and the NSE Nifty ended the previous week in the red, with the Sensex shedding 276.32 points (0.35%) and the Nifty declining by 76.35 points (0.31%).

As analysts assess the stock market trajectory, the prevailing consensus is that this week will be defined by how the Indian economy balances domestic resilience against the tightening influence of global liquidity and US monetary policy. Hariselvan Radhakrishnan, Founder & CEO of HST Wealth, suggested that investors remain in a “wait-and-see” mode, recalibrating their portfolios to account for potential volatility triggered by these impending economic reports.
