Large-Scale Rescue Operation Underway After Passenger Boat Capsizes Off Northern Cyprus

A massive search and rescue mission is currently unfolding off the coast of northern Cyprus after a ferry carrying approximately 270 people capsized in the Mediterranean Sea.

The vessel, which began taking on water roughly four miles off the coast of the coastal town of Kyrenia, reportedly overturned, leaving scores of passengers stranded at sea. Local television networks have broadcast dramatic footage showing the hull of the capsized vessel protruding from the water, with survivors wearing life vests clinging to the overturned ferry.

Murat Senkul, the mayor of Kyrenia, described the situation as “very serious” as local authorities scramble to locate the remaining passengers. Speaking to the broadcaster CNN Turk, Senkul confirmed that 159 people had been reached by rescue teams so far.

Erhan Arikli, the transport minister of the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), confirmed that at least 100 passengers have been successfully brought to shore. Ambulances have been stationed along the coastline to provide immediate medical attention, while a fleet of coastguard vessels and emergency helicopters continue to scour the area for those still missing.

The incident has triggered a major response from authorities in the region. The TRNC, which is recognized internationally only by Turkey, governs the northern third of the island, which has remained politically divided since 1974.

The cause of the vessel’s distress remains unknown as the search effort continues through the day. Officials are expected to provide further updates as more information becomes available regarding the total number of survivors and the condition of those rescued.
