EU Unlocks €3.4B Green Power-Up for Shipping and Sustainable Tech

The European Commission has announced a major strategic investment in the continent’s green transition, selecting 77 net-zero technology projects across 23 countries to receive a total of €3.4 billion in funding. Awarded through the EU’s Innovation Fund, the capital is earmarked for projects that promise to accelerate the decarbonization of Europe’s industrial landscape.

The selected initiatives span a diverse array of sectors, including energy-intensive industries, renewable energy, energy storage, cleantech manufacturing, and industrial carbon management. The funding aims to bolster critical raw materials processing and recycling, advanced alternative fuels, and sustainable mobility solutions. According to the Commission’s estimates, the collective impact of these 77 projects could prevent approximately 290 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions over their first ten years of operation.

The projects were categorized into five distinct topics, ranging from large, medium, and small-scale decarbonization efforts to specific cleantech manufacturing and pilot initiatives.

The largest share of the funding, approximately €1.58 billion, has been allocated to 12 large-scale projects. These ventures are focused on high-impact industrial sectors such as chemicals, iron and steel, and aviation, as well as industrial carbon management and projects aligned with the Critical Raw Materials Act.

Medium-scale projects secured roughly €458 million for 17 initiatives. These projects focus on a broad spectrum of industrial applications, including hydrogen, bioenergy, glass, cement, and lime production. Notably, the medium-scale category includes ambitious maritime projects aimed at de-carbonizing international trade. One such venture involves a “green ammonia” fuelled fleet of gas carriers equipped with tri-fuelled propulsion systems, designed to provide ship-to-ship bunkering on major transcontinental routes between India, the US Gulf Coast, and Northwest Europe. Another, the RIPPLE project in Denmark, focuses on retrofitting four Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLACs) with dual-fuel two-stroke engines, allowing the vessels to utilize the ammonia they carry as a primary fuel source.

An additional 20 small-scale projects will receive approximately €124 million. These projects target niche but essential areas such as pulp and paper manufacturing, ocean energy, and critical raw material recycling.

The maritime sector remains a focal point of this funding round. Beyond ammonia-powered shipping, the Commission is backing the retrofit of vessels operating on the Naantali-Kapellskär corridor between Finland and Sweden to be battery-ready. Furthermore, the OffshoreCharge project in Denmark and the SEATRON project—which aims to retrofit a 3,500-TEU container ship into a battery-electric vessel for the Bremerhaven-Hamburg-Gothenburg route—highlight a concerted effort to electrify short-sea shipping and reduce operational emissions.

Promoters of the 77 selected projects have now entered the grant agreement preparation phase with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency. During this stage, project leads and the Commission will finalize the specifics of the funding contracts, including detailed budgets, implementation timetables, and technical deliverables. The official results of these finalized agreements are expected in the first quarter of 2027.

As these projects move into the development phase, the European Commission is already looking toward the future of the Innovation Fund. The next round of calls for project proposals is currently scheduled to launch in early December 2026, signaling a continued commitment to maintaining Europe’s momentum in the global race for net-zero industrial leadership.
