Deep-Sea Synergy: TKMS and CFF Fluid Control Unite to Revolutionize Indian Naval Sonar Technology

TKMS and CFF Fluid Control Forge Strategic Joint Venture to Bolster India’s Underwater Defence Capabilities

In a significant move to strengthen India’s maritime security architecture, German defence giant ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and Mumbai-based CFF Fluid Control Limited have officially signed a Joint Venture (JV) agreement. The new entity, named TKMS CFF Defence Systems Private Limited, aims to become a cornerstone for indigenous underwater warfare technology in the country.

The partnership represents a controlling stake for the Indian firm, with CFF Fluid Control holding 51% of the JV, while TKMS maintains a 49% share. Headquartered in Mumbai, the venture is set to establish a state-of-the-art manufacturing and integration facility in Chakan, Pune. This dedicated hub will serve as the engine for developing sophisticated electronics and complex defense systems designed for the Indian Navy.

Deepening Ties Under ‘Make in India’

This collaboration is the culmination of a roadmap initiated in 2023 through an initial Teaming Agreement. By integrating their respective technological portfolios, the two companies are positioning themselves as a premier “systems house” capable of handling the entire lifecycle of underwater projects, from initial design and manufacturing to long-term maintenance and support.

The establishment of this JV serves as a direct boost to the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. The partnership focuses on anti-submarine warfare (ASW) technologies, seeking to reduce India’s reliance on foreign imports by building robust local industrial capacity.

Leveraging Global Expertise and Local Engineering

Michael Ozegowski, Executive Vice President of TKMS ATLAS ELEKTRONIK, emphasized the long-term vision behind the move. He stated that the venture is designed to provide the Indian Navy with high-end, indigenized solutions, underscoring the company’s deep-rooted commitment to the Indian defense ecosystem. By combining TKMS’s world-class sonar and sensor technologies with CFF’s proven track record in mechanical and electronic systems, the partnership aims to create a technological synergy that is both agile and responsive to the evolving maritime threat landscape.

Sunil Menon, Managing Director of CFF Fluid Control Limited, highlighted that the venture goes beyond a simple technology transfer. According to Menon, the goal is to cultivate enduring indigenous capability. He noted that the partnership is a reflection of the trust CFF has built through its engineering and fleet sustainment expertise, adding that the company is fully prepared to take on the responsibility of supporting critical naval defense programs.

Future-Proofing India’s Naval Fleet

The Pune-based facility is expected to play a vital role in addressing the Indian Navy’s current and future requirements in the underwater domain. As regional maritime competition intensifies, the ability to rapidly integrate, test, and deploy ASW technologies has become a national priority.

With the formation of TKMS CFF Defence Systems, the partners are not only setting up a manufacturing plant but also fostering a collaborative environment for research and development. This strategic alliance is expected to create high-value engineering jobs in Maharashtra and establish a sustainable supply chain for naval defense systems, ensuring that India remains at the forefront of underwater defense preparedness for years to come.
