Akhtar Issues Stark Warning: England Tour a Formidable Test for Babar Azam’s Pakistan
Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has sounded a stern note of caution for the national side, emphasizing the monumental challenge awaiting them on their upcoming Test tour of England. Akhtar warns that the English conditions will be unforgiving, a stark contrast to the lifeline Pakistan found in their recent series against the West Indies.
The tour marks the return of Babar Azam to the red-ball captaincy, a role he recently resumed with mixed outcomes. His first assignment saw Pakistan draw their series against the West Indies 1-1, a recovery after losing the opening Test. While the eight-wicket victory in the second match offered a glimmer of hope, it hasn’t entirely dispelled concerns surrounding Pakistan’s Test performances, particularly away from home.
Overseas Struggles and WTC Woes
Pakistan’s struggles on foreign soil have been particularly pronounced, reflected in their precarious position in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings. A defeat in the first Test against the West Indies saw them plummet to the bottom of the WTC table. The subsequent victory helped them claw back to eighth position, but the path ahead remains arduous.
The English series is anticipated to be a significantly tougher examination. England’s playing conditions have historically proven problematic for visiting teams, characterized by swing and seam that can dismantle batting line-ups. “England won’t make the same mistake West Indies did that allowed Pakistan to get into a winning position. They’ll prepare seam-friendly conditions, which will be very difficult for Pakistan to handle,” Akhtar said in a recent interview with a local sports platform, as quoted by Geo News.
Akhtar believes England will be acutely aware of Pakistan’s vulnerabilities and will likely tailor pitches to exploit them, rather than offer any reprieve or opportunity for Pakistan to settle, as seen in the second Test against the West Indies.

Pakistan’s recent overseas record further underscores the significance of the upcoming series. Their most recent Test victory away from home dates back to 2023 against Sri Lanka, achieved during Babar’s previous stint as captain. Following that, Babar stepped down, making way for Shan Masood, whose nearly three-year tenure also failed to reverse the trend of difficulties outside home conditions.
Under Masood’s leadership, Pakistan suffered a 3-0 whitewash in Australia, followed by a 2-0 defeat in South Africa, and another 2-0 loss in Bangladesh. This prolonged winless streak in away Tests highlights a persistent struggle to adapt to diverse international conditions, particularly those outside the subcontinent.
With Babar Azam once again at the helm of the Test side, the England tour presents another crucial opportunity for Pakistan to address these deep-seated concerns.
