Dingko Singh Biopic: Raja Krishna Menon says Shahid Kapoor might NOT BE INTERESTED in doing Dingko Singh biopic now; Here's why | Hindi Movie News

Filmmaker Raja Krishna Menon maintains his fervent desire to bring the remarkable life story of the late Manipuri boxer Ngangom Dingko Singh to the silver screen. Despite the significant passage of time since initial plans for the Dingko Singh biopic were discussed, with Shahid Kapoor originally slated for the lead role, Menon has not abandoned the project. He acknowledges that while the narrative remains deeply personal and compelling, a re-evaluation of the casting is now essential.

In a recent interview, Raja Krishna Menon articulated his enduring belief in the extraordinary nature of Dingko Singh’s journey. He highlighted that Dingko Singh’s origins in a region requiring greater representation, coupled with his profound impact beyond the confines of the boxing ring, make his story uniquely powerful. Menon emphasized that Dingko’s achievements not only reshaped the local landscape, transforming it into a prominent sports hub, but also revealed him to be a captivating maverick whose life interwoven with significant socio-political dimensions.

The initial conception of the film featured Shahid Kapoor portraying the celebrated boxer. However, the considerable delay in the project’s development has led Menon to reconsider this casting choice. He candidly expressed his doubt regarding Shahid Kapoor’s continued interest, primarily due to the fact that much of Dingko Singh’s pivotal life events transpired when he was in his early twenties. This temporal discrepancy necessitates a younger actor for the role, a recognition that prompts Menon to seek a fresh perspective for the central character.

Menon conceded that translating Dingko Singh’s complex life onto film presents substantial challenges, yet his optimism remains undimmed. He expressed a strong aspiration to realize this project, provided all the necessary elements align harmoniously.

Ngangom Dingko Singh’s athletic prowess was underscored by his momentous gold medal victory in the 54kg category at the 1998 Asian Games held in Bangkok. This triumph solidified his status as one of India’s most revered boxers. His distinguished career also included representing India at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, and his contributions were further acknowledged with the prestigious Arjuna Award and the Padma Shri. Tragically, Dingko Singh passed away in 2021 at the age of 42.

Meanwhile, fans of Shahid Kapoor last saw him on the big screen in ‘Cocktail 2’. This film, which co-starred Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Madanna and was directed by Homi Adajania, had its theatrical release earlier this year in June.
