As NVIDIA prepares to roll out its cutting-edge DLSS 5 Neural Rendering technology, early testing has uncovered a surprising potential bottleneck. While the GeForce RTX 5090 is arguably the most powerful consumer graphics card on the market, it appears that the standard power delivery system—specifically the single 12V-2×6 power connector found on the Founders Edition—may be preventing the GPU from reaching its full potential when handling intensive neural tasks.

The Power Gap: Founders Edition vs. Lightning Z

To investigate the limits of this new technology, recent benchmarks compared two variants of the RTX 5090: the NVIDIA Founders Edition (FE) and the ultra-premium MSI RTX 5090 Lightning Z.

The differences in their power architecture are stark. The Founders Edition is strictly capped at a 575W power limit, utilizing a single 12V-2×6 connector. In contrast, the MSI Lightning Z features a dual-connector configuration capable of drawing up to 1000W of power.

When testing DLSS 5 via the Optiscaler implementation—which mimics the performance overhead of NVIDIA’s official Streamline framework—the results were revealing.

Benchmarking the Bottleneck

In titles like Cyberpunk 2077, both cards performed comparably with DLSS 5 disabled. However, once the neural rendering was activated, the performance gap widened significantly. The Founders Edition hit a hard power ceiling at roughly 551W, while the Lightning Z ramped up to 723W. This additional headroom allowed the MSI card to outperform the Founders Edition by as much as 17% in frames per second.

Similar findings were mirrored in other demanding titles:

  • Hogwarts Legacy: The Lightning Z maintained a 16% performance lead over the FE, pulling 720W compared to the FE’s 547W.
  • Control: The performance gap stretched to over 20% in favor of the Lightning Z, which pushed power draw as high as 802W, while the Founders Edition remained throttled by its 575W limit.

Is the Hardware Held Back?

The data suggests that the intense computational requirements of DLSS 5 demand more power than a standard single 16-pin connection can comfortably provide under peak loads. For enthusiasts looking to extract every frame possible, the Founders Edition’s power-constrained design appears to be a limiting factor when running the most advanced rendering features currently available.

As DLSS 5 launches officially with titles like NBA 2K27, the community is expected to keep a close watch on how power limits influence frame stability across different GPU models. For now, it seems that for the RTX 5090, more power is indeed better—provided your cooling and power supply can handle the jump.
