Chelsea Swoop for World Cup Winner Emiliano Martinez in £7.5m Deal

In a dramatic late-window maneuver, Chelsea have reached an agreement with Aston Villa to secure the services of Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez for a fee of £7.5 million. The 33-year-old international is expected to arrive in London shortly to undergo a medical, signaling a swift resolution to Chelsea’s growing concerns regarding their current options between the sticks.

The move marks a significant shift in strategy for the Stamford Bridge hierarchy, who had previously maintained their support for incumbent goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. However, pressure on the position intensified following Chelsea’s narrow 3-2 victory over Fulham earlier this week. Sanchez, the club’s first-choice keeper since 2023, faced heavy scrutiny after a shaky performance that saw him allow a Josh King strike to slip through his grasp at the near post, followed by a handling error in the second half that gifted a goal to Fulham’s Gonzalo Garcia.

While Chelsea possess young talent in their ranks—most notably £17m signing Mike Penders from Genk, who is slated to make his debut in Thursday’s Carabao Cup tie against Luton Town—the club opted for the experience and proven pedigree of the veteran Martinez.

For Aston Villa, the departure of the World Cup winner has been on the cards since the club invested roughly £30m to bring Japan international Zion Suzuki to Villa Park from Parma earlier this month.

The deal is the latest chapter in a burgeoning commercial relationship between the two Premier League clubs. The sides have remained frequent trade partners, recently finalizing a £117m deal for forward Morgan Rogers to head to London, while Alejandro Garnacho moved to the Midlands on an initial loan deal. Additionally, Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson is currently finalizing a move to join former Villarreal manager Unai Emery at Villa Park.

The clubs previously grabbed headlines for their involvement in a “PSR swap” deal, which facilitated the movement of Ian Maatsen to Villa and Omari Kellyman to Chelsea, moves designed to help navigate profitability and sustainability regulations.

The acquisition of Martinez is particularly notable given the interest shown by Juventus earlier in the window. That potential transfer collapsed following medical concerns regarding a finger injury, leading the Serie A giants to pursue Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario instead. Chelsea, however, have clearly performed their due diligence and are moving quickly to solidify their defensive setup before the transfer deadline.
