An investigation has been launched following a huge fire at a waste site in Rochdale. Crews worked throughout the night last Friday (July 24) after a blaze broke out off Spring Mill Walk, in Smallbridge.
Thick plumes of smoke were seen billowing above the area, visible for miles around. Firefighters were called out to the scene at 8.15pm and worked until around 1pm the following day.
The Environment Agency became involved as the fire involved a large quantity of waste at the site. In an update issued this morning (August 1), the Environment Agency has confirmed that the fire took place at an illegal waste site.

It says the site is now under investigation following the blaze. Dramatic images showed the scale of the operation which faced firefighters last weekend.
Six fire engines were called out to the scene, with specialist equipment used to extinguish the fire. Residents in the surrounding area were urged to keep their windows and doors closed.
