Scale of Disaster ‘Beyond Imagination’ as Rescuers Race Against Time in Nepal

Rescue teams are currently engaged in a desperate race against time to locate survivors following a catastrophic flash flood that has devastated regions along the Nepal-China border. Officials have described the destruction as “beyond imagination,” marking the nation’s most severe disaster since the 2015 earthquake, which claimed nearly 9,000 lives.

While local authorities have confirmed at least 31 deaths, officials warn that the final toll remains unclear as the full extent of the tragedy continues to unfold across multiple downstream districts.

Infrastructure and Trade Severed

The most severe damage has been concentrated in the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, where settlements lining the banks of the Bhotekoshi river have been decimated. Although these regions are sparsely populated, they serve as a critical economic artery for the nation, housing major highways and bridges essential for trade between Nepal and China.

In addition to the loss of residential settlements, vital infrastructure—including several hydropower plants—has been wiped out. The destruction of these transport links has significantly hampered the ability of aid workers and emergency responders to reach the most isolated communities.

A Region of Strategic Importance

The impact of the flooding extends to the thousands of travelers who frequent the area annually. The region is a major transit corridor for international tourists and Indian nationals embarking on pilgrimages to Kailash Mansarovar in Tibet. Furthermore, the timing of the disaster coincides with the Hindu festival of Janai Purnima, during which hundreds of Nepali pilgrims typically travel to the sacred site of Gosaikunda, located within a nearby national park.

A Cycle of Destruction

This latest tragedy has cast a somber shadow over the local community, which is still reeling from the effects of previous climate-related disasters. Just last year, a similar flash flood in the same area claimed 18 lives and caused an estimated Rs 6bn (£46m) in damages.

As dusk approaches today, the priority remains on search and rescue operations. However, the rapidly deteriorating conditions and the scale of the debris present significant challenges for those on the ground.
