U.S. Rep. David Scott (D-GA), who has served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 23 years after winning 12 terms, has died. He was 80 years old.

As noted in a report from Politico, news of Scott’s death was announced by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) during a Wednesday committee hearing.

In recent years, Scott’s colleagues had become increasingly concerned about the longtime representative’s health. Multiple anonymous Democrats said in 2022 that Scott, the chair of the Agriculture Committee at the time, was “unable to maintain control of routine committee hearings.” Two years later, Scott made headlines when he yelled at a member of the press for taking his photograph as he was entering the Capitol building. At the time, Scott was in a wheelchair.

Scott was seeking a 13th term in the House.

Congress has had numerous deaths in just the past year. Last May, 75-year-old Democrat Gerry Connolly died following a battle with esophageal cancer; and 65-year-old Republican Doug LaMalfa died suddenly in January 2026. At the time of writing, the House of Representatives totaled 430.
