Graduate College Jamshedpur students interview faculty members on Hindi Journalism Day

Jamshedpur: Students of the Hindi Department at Jamshedpur Graduate School College for Women marked Hindi Journalism Day with a unique and interactive initiative by stepping into the role of journalists and interviewing faculty members from various departments.

The event was organized under the guidance of Dr. Bharti Kumari, Head of the Department of Hindi, who highlighted the significance of journalism in strengthening democratic values and maintaining impartiality. Addressing the students, she remarked that journalism was not merely a profession but a responsibility voluntarily undertaken in the service of society. She stressed that safeguarding democratic principles remained one of the most important duties of those associated with the media.

As part of the activity, students prepared five thought-provoking questions focusing on professional inspiration, career preparation, challenges faced, contributors to success, and messages for students. Armed with these questions, they conducted interviews with faculty members from different academic disciplines.

Vinita Kumari, a Semester III student of Hindi, interviewed Dr. Anita Chaudhary, Head of the Department of English. Semester IV students Mahvish Parveen and Rupali Baskey interviewed Dr. Nupur, Head of the Department of History, and Dr. Mukta Rani Oria from the History Department, respectively. Similarly, Semester VII students Prerana Barik and Priyanka Mahto interviewed Dr. Bharti Kumari and Dr. Dipti from the Department of Geography.

The participating students described the experience as both educational and enjoyable. While many admitted to feeling nervous initially, they said the supportive and encouraging attitude of the faculty members helped them gain confidence quickly. The exercise provided valuable exposure to the fundamentals of interviewing and journalistic communication.

At the conclusion of the program, Dr. Bharti Kumari distributed chocolates among the students as a gesture of encouragement and appreciation for their enthusiastic participation.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Rakesh Kumar Pandey of the Hindi Department reflected on the significance of Hindi Journalism Day. He noted that the day commemorated the publication of Udant Martand, India’s first Hindi weekly newspaper, launched on May 30, 1826, by Pandit Jugal Kishore Shukla from Kolkata. The annual observance, he said, offers an opportunity to celebrate the rich legacy of Hindi journalism while reflecting on its evolving role and future challenges as the fourth pillar of Indian democracy.

The innovative event successfully combined learning with practical experience, giving students a deeper appreciation of journalism and its enduring importance in society.
