Rockstar Addresses GTA 6 Performance Concerns: 30FPS Currently Expected at Launch

Anticipation for Grand Theft Auto 6 has reached a fever pitch following recent gameplay reveals that showcased stunning visuals running on a base PlayStation 5. However, as fans celebrate the game’s technical fidelity, a critical question remains: will players be forced to sacrifice high frame rates for these ultra-realistic graphics? According to recent reports, the answer for launch day may be a firm “yes.”

Rob Nelson, Lead Developer and Co-director at Rockstar North, recently spoke with content creators who were invited to the studio for an exclusive look at the upcoming title. During these discussions, it was revealed that the game is currently locked to 30 frames per second (FPS) on consoles during this phase of development.

Performance Uncertainty

Reporting from Flow Games—which participated in the studio visit—confirms that while the team is working toward a polished experience, Rockstar has not yet committed to a 60FPS performance mode. According to Nelson, the development team still needs to consult with their technical engineers to determine if a higher framerate option will be feasible at launch or if it might be added in a post-release update.

Furthermore, specifics regarding resolution targets and the implementation of advanced features like ray tracing remain under wraps. As it stands, GTA 6 will be 30FPS at launch, with Rockstar remaining non-committal about any future performance toggles.

A History of Conservative Performance

A 30FPS cap at launch would align with Rockstar’s historical approach to its massive open-world titles. Both Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 prioritized graphical density over high frame rates upon their initial releases. In fact, GTA V did not receive an official 60FPS upgrade until it was ported to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, and Red Dead Redemption 2 continues to run at 30FPS even on modern hardware.

Whether the mid-generation PS5 Pro might offer a workaround—such as a 40FPS mode for 120Hz displays—remains speculative. For now, players looking to experience the game at higher frame rates will likely have to wait for an eventual PC port, which has not yet been officially dated. Given that the PC version of GTA V arrived nearly 18 months after its console debut, the wait for a high-refresh-rate experience could be significant.

As Rockstar continues to refine the most ambitious project in its history, the focus clearly remains on stability and visual immersion. While the lack of a 60FPS confirmation may disappoint performance purists, the developer’s track record suggests that when GTA 6 finally arrives, it will be designed to push current-generation hardware to its absolute limit.
