Home Depot CEO Ted Decker Takes Temporary Medical Leave, Interim Leadership Appointed
Home Depot CEO Ted Decker is taking a “temporary medical leave of absence” for the next few months, with the retail giant announcing the appointment of two seasoned deputies to lead the company during his absence. The unexpected announcement came on Wednesday, just days before the company is scheduled to release its fiscal second-quarter earnings.
In a strategic move to ensure seamless operations, Ann-Marie Campbell, Home Depot’s Senior Executive Vice President of U.S. Stores and Operations, will assume responsibility for day-to-day operations. Concurrently, Richard McPhail, the company’s Chief Financial Officer, will oversee financial management and the critical Pro business segment.
Further bolstering the interim leadership structure, Greg Brenneman, the lead independent director of Home Depot’s board, will step into the role of chair of the board during Decker’s leave. The board of directors confirmed these appointments, emphasizing that they were made “in alignment with Decker’s recommendation,” indicating a well-planned transition.
“The Home Depot has the best management team in retail. Both Ann-Marie and Richard are strong, seasoned executives who have worked together for more than 20 years,” Brenneman stated in a news release. “We are confident in Ann-Marie’s and Richard’s ability to lead the company during this time, and we look forward to Ted’s return.”

The timing of Decker’s leave is particularly notable as it precedes the announcement of the company’s fiscal second-quarter earnings, scheduled for next Tuesday. Home Depot has not provided further details regarding the nature of Decker’s medical condition.
The interim leaders bring extensive experience to their elevated roles. Ann-Marie Campbell, 61, boasts a remarkable career with Home Depot, having joined the company in 1985 as a cashier and steadily ascending through the ranks to her current position as EVP of stores and operations. Richard McPhail, 56, has served as Home Depot’s chief financial officer since September 2019, having joined the organization in 2005.
Notably, a securities filing confirmed that both executives will not receive additional compensation for taking on these increased responsibilities during Decker’s temporary absence, underscoring their commitment to the company’s stability.
