Myth vs. Reality: Assessing the True Environmental Cost of Scotland’s AI Data Centre Boom

As the push for artificial intelligence intensifies, Scotland is witnessing a rapid surge in the development of data centres. However, this infrastructure expansion has triggered widespread local apprehension—ranging from fears over water scarcity to bizarre, unfounded claims that the facilities are affecting the reproductive cycles of local livestock.

Experts are now working to separate fact from fiction, arguing that a distinct lack of transparent monitoring and research is fueling the “runaway” myths surrounding these sites.

The Truth About Water Consumption

A primary concern among communities is the environmental toll of cooling these massive facilities. Many critics cite the water-intensive evaporative cooling towers historically used in the United States, which place significant strain on local water supplies.

However, the reality for many newer projects in the UK is markedly different. Modern data centres are increasingly adopting closed-loop cooling systems. These systems circulate coolant through sealed pipes, eliminating the need for constant replenishment and drastically reducing water usage.

Professor Ana Basiri, director of the Centre for Data Science and AI at Glasgow University, points to local success stories. “In a closed-loop system, the coolant gets heated one or two degrees and goes back; it’s not that bad for the environment,” she explains. Citing the DataVita facility in Lanarkshire, Basiri noted that its closed-loop model achieves 97% greater efficiency than similarly sized data centres in London.

The Problem of Transparency

Despite these technological strides, quantifying the overall impact of the industry remains difficult. Since 2024, the UK Government has classified data centres as “critical national infrastructure,” placing them in the same category as NHS hospitals.

This designation has, in some instances, bypassed rigorous local planning and environmental impact assessments. According to Basiri, this lack of oversight creates a vacuum of information: “When you ask how bad or good they are—the answer is we actually don’t know.”

In response to public pressure, the Scottish Government has taken decisive action, recently mandating that all proposed data centres must publish comprehensive environmental impact assessments. Planning authorities are now required to notify Scottish ministers of new applications—a move campaigners have hailed as a victory for public accountability.

Beyond the Myths: Genuine Concerns

While concerns regarding cattle health have been dismissed by experts as “misinformation,” there are tangible issues that remain front and centre. Noise pollution, for instance, is a legitimate concern for residents living in proximity to the constant hum of cooling fans. While noise levels typically stay within regulatory decibel limits, the persistent low-frequency drone can disrupt sleep and impact the well-being of local wildlife.

Perhaps the most significant challenge is the energy demand of these AI hubs. Earlier reports highlighted that a “green” data centre in Larbert could potentially become one of Scotland’s top 10 polluters due to its reliance on diesel-powered emergency generators. While these generators are intended only for power outages, the rapid growth of AI risks straining the grid, forcing developers to rely on fossil-fuel-powered backups.

As the debate continues, experts insist that there is a need for clearer definitions regarding what constitutes a “green” data centre. Professor Basiri remains cautiously optimistic: “If we build it right, it’s going to be amazing—you create jobs and provide the infrastructure to do AI more efficiently. But if you don’t do it right, it’s going to be catastrophic for the local community.”

As the industry matures, the environmental impact of data centres remains a critical point of contention, requiring a balance between technological progress and rigorous, evidence-based regulation.
