Fire Department Minister Kaushik Chowdhury, who visited the site, confirmed that the deceased included both Indian and Bangladeshi nationals. "We are trying to establish their identities. The situation inside this building is very bad. There are several hotels inside this building. I am shocked to see what was going on here," Chowdhury stated, highlighting the precarious conditions.

While a preliminary assessment suggests a short circuit may have ignited the fire, the minister emphasized that a definitive cause would only be determined after a thorough forensic examination. Crucially, Chowdhury revealed that the building management had failed to comply with basic safety and construction norms. "It is alleged that there were several irregularities in the functioning of the hotel," he added, hinting at potential negligence that contributed to the tragedy.

Police officials on the ground described the immense difficulties faced by firefighters. "Dense smoke made it difficult for firefighters to reach the upper floors," a police officer told PTI. The officer reiterated concerns that the death toll could escalate, stating, "While nine people have died, more deaths are feared."

Another officer detailed the ongoing efforts: "Our priority is to rescue those trapped and determine the reasons for the fire. The flames have been doused, but the building is very, very hot. The cooling process is underway."

Adding to the gravity of the situation, authorities reported that the owner of the building was absconding, and a case was being registered against him. This development underscores the potential for criminal charges related to the safety lapses.
