Indian and Thai Armies Embark on Joint Counter-Terrorism Exercise MAITREE-XV

NEW DELHI – August 18, 2026 – A contingent of the Indian Army departed on Sunday for Thailand to participate in the 15th iteration of the India-Thailand Joint Military Exercise, MAITREE-XV (2026). This significant bilateral exercise underscores the growing strategic partnership between the two nations, focusing on enhancing combined capabilities in challenging operational environments.

The exercise is scheduled to take place from August 18 to 31 at the Vibhavadi Rangsit Camp in Surat Thani, Thailand. This year’s edition follows the successful MAITREE-XIV, which was hosted by India at the Foreign Training Node, Umroi, Meghalaya, in September 2025.

Both the Indian Army and the Royal Thai Army are deploying robust contingents, each comprising 85 highly trained personnel. The Indian Army’s contingent is primarily represented by troops from the esteemed 9 Gorkha Rifles, known for their exceptional prowess in diverse terrains. Their counterparts from the Royal Thai Army consist of personnel from the 3rd Battalion, 25th Infantry Brigade, 5th Division, a unit recognized for its operational readiness.

The core of MAITREE-XV will involve intensive company-level joint training, specifically tailored to operations within jungle and semi-urban terrains. These environments present unique challenges that necessitate specialized tactics, coordination, and interoperability.

The overarching aim of Exercise MAITREE is to foster deeper military cooperation and bolster the combined capabilities of the two armies in conducting joint counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations. Crucially, these operations will be conducted under the framework of Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, emphasizing adherence to international humanitarian law and best practices.

The comprehensive training program includes a diverse range of activities designed to maximize learning and readiness. Participants will engage in rigorous field exercises, tactical discussions, informative lectures, and practical demonstrations. The exercise will culminate in a validation exercise, testing the combined forces’ ability to execute complex missions effectively. Furthermore, both contingents will seize this opportunity to exchange invaluable operational experiences, sharing insights gained from their respective deployments. They will also showcase contemporary equipment and cutting-edge technologies employed during joint operations, promoting technological understanding and potential future collaborations.

Instituted in 2006, Exercise MAITREE has evolved into a vital platform for the continuous sharing of best practices and the strengthening of military cooperation between India and Thailand. This annual exercise is instrumental in enhancing interoperability, fostering mutual understanding, and building camaraderie among the soldiers of both nations. By deepening these military ties, MAITREE-XV further reinforces the longstanding and robust bilateral relations that exist between India and Thailand, contributing to regional peace and stability.
