Political Firestorm in Tamil Nadu: Stalin Slams Government for Abandoning Parandur Airport Project
CHENNAI – A major political confrontation has erupted in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly following Chief Minister Vijay’s sudden announcement to scrap the ambitious Parandur greenfield airport project. The decision, aimed at preserving agricultural land and protecting the livelihoods of residents in 12 surrounding villages, has been sharply criticized by the opposition as a “short-sighted” move that threatens the state’s economic future.
DMK chief and former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin led the backlash, describing the cancellation as an irreversible setback for Tamil Nadu’s industrial and economic growth. “Tamil Nadu’s interests cannot be mortgaged for petty political considerations,” Stalin asserted in a series of posts on X, claiming the project’s termination will push the state’s infrastructure development back by several years.
A Controversial Exit
The Parandur project, which received in-principle approval from the Civil Aviation Ministry in April 2025, was intended to be a cornerstone of the state’s aviation strategy, capable of handling up to 100 million passengers annually.
The political tension boiled over in the Assembly on Monday when DMK legislators staged a walkout after Speaker JCD Prabhakar denied their request to debate the decision. Stalin condemned the government for using Rule No. 110 to announce the cancellation, arguing that such a significant policy shift required transparency and legislative discourse rather than a unilateral executive decree.
Conflicting Visions for Development
The debate centers on the tension between rapid industrialization and environmental sustainability. When the project was first proposed by the DMK government in 2022, it was met with fierce resistance from local farmers and environmental activists. Critics pointed out that nearly half of the 5,369 acres marked for the airport consisted of fertile, multi-crop agricultural land and ecologically sensitive wetlands, including numerous lakes and canals.
Chief Minister Vijay, who had expressed solidarity with the protesting villagers in January 2025 by stating that the project should not come “at the cost of nature,” appears to have prioritized these local concerns. He reiterated that the state remains committed to meeting Chennai’s aviation needs through a yet-to-be-disclosed alternative site and by expanding the capacity of the existing airport.
Economic Implications
For the opposition, the decision is a blow to the state’s aspirations of reaching a $1 trillion economy. Stalin argued that the site selection process had already undergone rigorous scrutiny, with land acquisition nearly complete.
“If the new government now starts all over again, identifies another location, and goes through the entire process, Tamil Nadu’s growth trajectory itself will drop,” Stalin warned. He further suggested that the move serves as a “jackpot for competing states,” fearing that investors might look elsewhere if infrastructure projects are subject to such abrupt shifts in political priority.
As the TVK government prepares to draft a new roadmap for aviation infrastructure, the debate over whether the abandonment of Parandur represents a victory for local communities or a massive economic blunder is set to remain a focal point of Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
