Onam Box Office Face-off: ‘Bethlehem Kudumba Unit’ Surges Ahead of ‘Khalifa’

The Malayalam film industry is witnessing a high-stakes clash this Onam season as two major releases, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Khalifa and Nivin Pauly’s Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, continue their theatrical run. While both films are drawing audiences, their box office trajectories have begun to diverge significantly, with the latter showing explosive momentum.

‘Bethlehem Kudumba Unit’ Gains Massive Momentum

Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju’s Bethlehem Kudumba Unit has emerged as the clear frontrunner in the weekend race. Directed by Girish A.D., the film witnessed a phenomenal surge in interest on its third day, raking in an estimated Rs 8.80 crore in India net collections across 1,781 shows. This represents a robust 23.1% growth compared to its Saturday earnings of Rs 7.15 crore.

The film’s dominance is further reflected in its stellar occupancy rates, which peaked at an impressive 88.25% during evening screenings. With a consistent upward trend since its release, the film has now solidified its position as a commercial powerhouse. Driven by strong word-of-mouth and high demand in its home state of Kerala, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit has officially surpassed the Rs 61.05 crore worldwide gross collection mark, bolstered by a significant Rs 36.70 crore contribution from international markets.

‘Khalifa’ Records Marginal Stability

In contrast, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Khalifa has maintained a steady, albeit slower, pace. On its fourth day, the film recorded an estimated India net collection of Rs 1.88 crore. This figure reflects a marginal 1.1% decline from its Saturday performance of Rs 1.90 crore, indicating that the film is holding its ground but lacks the explosive growth seen by its competitor.

Despite the slight dip, Khalifa showed resilience in audience engagement throughout the day. Occupancy improved steadily as the day progressed, starting at 11.75% in the morning and climbing to 43.83% for the night shows. To date, Khalifa has accumulated an India net collection of Rs 11.53 crore, with its total worldwide gross standing at Rs 27.68 crore.

Regional Breakdown and Outlook

While Bethlehem Kudumba Unit continues to perform exceptionally well—with Kerala contributing Rs 7.40 crore to its daily gross alone—the market remains competitive. Both films have leveraged the Onam holiday period to maximize reach, but the distinct performance patterns suggest that Nivin Pauly’s latest venture has struck a more resonant chord with the current cinema-going audience.

As the week progresses, trade analysts will be watching closely to see if Khalifa can pick up momentum or if Bethlehem Kudumba Unit will maintain its dominant lead in the closing days of the festival season.
