Indian Junior Women’s Hockey Team Sets Sights on Continental Glory at Junior Asia Cup in Moqi

New Delhi, 29th August: The future stars of Indian hockey have officially begun their journey toward international excellence. The Indian Junior Women’s Hockey Team departed today for Moqi, China, brimming with confidence as they prepare to compete in the prestigious AHF Women’s Junior Asia Cup 2026, set to take place from 4th to 13th September.

Led by captain and dynamic midfielder Khaidem Shileima Chanu, the 18-member squad enters the tournament following a rigorous preparation phase. Under the guidance of newly appointed coach Tim White, the team has focused on refining their tactical discipline and match fitness, ensuring they are primed for the high-intensity atmosphere of continental competition.

Building Momentum Through International Exposure

The team’s readiness is underscored by a highly successful exposure tour of the United Kingdom held this past July. Across seven matches played in Edinburgh and Lilleshall, the Indian side demonstrated remarkable tactical growth against elite international opponents.

The squad showcased their offensive prowess with a commanding 6-0 victory over the United States and secured back-to-back 2-0 wins against England. They further proved their composure under pressure by edging out the USA in a tense shootout (1-1, 3-2 on penalties). These encounters, paired with challenging matches against the Scotland Senior Women’s team and a robust Belgium U-21 side, have provided the team with the depth of experience needed to navigate the challenges of the Junior Asia Cup.

Tactical Readiness and Ambition

Reflecting on the team’s evolution, Coach Tim White expressed optimism regarding their tactical blueprint. “The team is very excited to leave for China,” White stated. “Our preparation has been comprehensive, bolstered by competitive internal matches against the India A side in Bangalore. We are heading to China confident that we have developed a game plan that will be difficult for our opponents to dismantle, and we are eager to test that structure against the best in Asia.”

The Road Ahead in Moqi

The AHF Women’s Junior Asia Cup serves as a vital proving ground for the continent’s premier junior talent. India has been placed in a challenging Women’s Elite Pool alongside hosts China, Japan, Korea, and Malaysia.

The campaign promises a grueling test of endurance, with the team facing four consecutive high-stakes pool matches before the tournament transitions into the knockout stages. The final gold-medal showdown is scheduled for 13th September.

India’s Elite Pool Fixtures:

Date Match Opponent Time (Local)
Saturday, 5th Sept W06 India v Korea 13:00 Hrs
Sunday, 6th Sept W07 India v Malaysia 09:00 Hrs
Tuesday, 8th Sept W14 Japan v India 11:00 Hrs
Wednesday, 9th Sept W20 China v India 19:00 Hrs

As the team arrives in Moqi, the focus shifts to translating months of intense training and international experience into a podium finish. With a blend of tactical discipline and renewed vigor, the Indian Junior Women’s squad looks ready to make their mark on the Asian stage.
