Tragedy at Khavda Hill: Teenager Who Died in iPhone Dispute Had Attempted Suicide at Same Site Last Year
CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR, MAHARASHTRA – A devastating family tragedy in the Tisgaon area has taken a haunting turn as investigators reveal that the 19-year-old at the center of the incident had previously attempted to take his own life at the very same cliffside location last year.
The incident, which resulted in the deaths of a teenager and both of his parents, unfolded at Khavda Hill earlier this week. What began as a domestic dispute over mobile phone EMIs spiraled into a fatal sequence of events that left local authorities and onlookers in shock.
A History of Distress
According to reports, the teenager’s desperate act on Friday was not an isolated occurrence. Sources indicate that he had made an identical suicide bid at the same cliff last year. During that previous attempt, he was successfully persuaded by police to abandon his plans and return to safety. Authorities are now investigating whether the ongoing financial pressure regarding his iPhone’s monthly installments was the sole catalyst for his final, fatal decision, or if there were deeper underlying issues.
A Three-Hour Standoff
The tragedy began around 10:00 a.m. on Friday after the teenager escalated an argument with his parents over his demand for money. The boy climbed to the edge of the hill and threatened to jump, initiating a harrowing three-hour standoff.
As the situation intensified, police, fire brigade personnel, and local villagers gathered at the base of the cliff to plead with the youth. Despite attempts by the fire department to deploy a safety net, the boy’s constant movement along the treacherous edge made rescue efforts nearly impossible.
A Desperate Attempt at Rescue
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the teenager’s father climbed the hill to personally intervene. For nearly 20 minutes, he attempted to reason with his son. At approximately 1:00 p.m., the father moved in to grab the boy, but in the ensuing struggle, both slipped and fell. The teenager’s mother, who had been watching the harrowing ordeal from below, reportedly fell shortly thereafter.
Videos circulated on social media captured the intensity of the standoff, showing the failed efforts of officials and the village Sarpanch to talk the youth down from the edge. The bodies have since been recovered by police for post-mortem examinations.
The incident has sparked a local debate regarding the tragedy, raising difficult questions about mental health support and the intervention protocols required for individuals who demonstrate recurring suicidal tendencies.
