No arrests have been made in connection with the incident. A white car was also pictured in the middle of the road at the scene and appeared to be damaged.

The road was closed off shortly after lunchtime while police and other emergency services responded. Traffic officers manned the cordon amid ongoing enquires throughout the afternoon.

Greater Manchester Police also shut the road in both directions amid the major response, which caused further congestion in the area due to the scale of the cordon.
