Pakistan Cricket in Crisis: PCB Demands Accountability as Selection Committee Faces Internal Shake-up

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has launched a formal inquiry into its national selection committee, demanding a detailed explanation regarding the inclusion of Mohammad Rizwan and Imam-ul-Haq in the Test squad for the ongoing series against England. This move marks a significant escalation in the internal Pakistan cricket chaos currently engulfing the national team.

Scrutiny of the Selection Process

According to reports, the PCB issued a stern notice to committee members—including Aqib Javed, Misbah-ul-Haq, and Asad Shafiq—on August 31. The board has requested a written account of the criteria and performance metrics used to justify the selection of Rizwan and Imam during a pivotal meeting held on June 2.

The committee members were given a 24-hour window to justify their decisions, a development that underscores the board’s growing frustration following a dismal performance in the Test series. Pakistan suffered back-to-back defeats against England, losing by an innings and 103 runs in the opener and falling by 194 runs at Lord’s, effectively surrendering the series 2-0.

Sweeping Overhaul and Personnel Changes

The board’s demand for accountability follows a radical mid-series reshuffle. In an effort to stop the rot, the PCB released seven players from the Test squad, including Rizwan and Imam, ahead of the third Test at Edgbaston. They were joined by Salman Ali Agha, Ali Usman, Aamir Jamal, Muhammad Awais Zafar, and Khurram Shahzad on the list of exclusions.

To fill the void, the management has drafted in a younger contingent, including Saim Ayub and Abdullah Fazal, alongside Arafat Minhas, Mohammad Imran Jnr, Saad Baig, Mohammad Imran, and Razaullah.

The structural changes extend beyond the player roster. The coaching setup has also seen a major transition, with head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul being removed. In their stead, the PCB has appointed white-ball head coach Mike Hesson and bowling coach Ashley Noffke to manage the squad for the remainder of the English tour.

Misbah-ul-Haq Steps Down

Amid the organizational turmoil, the selection committee itself is fracturing. Sources have confirmed that former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq has decided to resign from his role. Having informed the board of his intent to leave, he has agreed to serve a notice period before formally vacating his position.

The convergence of a disastrous on-field performance and a complete loss of faith in the selection process has left the future of Pakistan’s Test cricket in a state of deep uncertainty. As the PCB seeks to identify where the decision-making process failed, the pressure remains on the incoming staff and remaining selectors to salvage pride in the final stages of the England tour.
