Konami Refreshes Iconic Metal Gear Solid 4 Joke for Modern Platforms

As the gaming industry prepares for the highly anticipated launch of the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2, fans have discovered a delightful nod to the series’ history. Konami has opted to update one of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots’ most meta moments, ensuring the game’s fourth-wall-breaking humor remains relevant for a new generation of hardware.

A Legacy of Meta-Humor

In the original 2008 PlayStation 3 release, Metal Gear Solid 4 famously poked fun at the memory of the original PlayStation era. Upon reaching Shadow Moses Island, the character Otacon would instruct Snake to "change the disc," mimicking the disc-swapping requirement of the 1998 classic. When Snake pointed out that there was no second disc, Otacon would sheepishly realize, “Oh, wait! We’re on PlayStation 3.”

With the collection bringing the title to modern hardware—including the Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2—retaining the original line would have felt jarringly dated. Rather than simply cutting the scene, Konami chose to modernize the dialogue to reflect the specific platform the player is currently using.

Bringing Back the Voice

Demonstrating an impressive level of commitment to detail, Konami did not rely on placeholder audio or recycled lines. Instead, the developers brought back original voice actor Christopher Randolph to re-record the scene. Randolph, who has voiced Otacon throughout the series, stepped back into the booth to ensure the updated lines delivered the same comedic timing as the original.

Players can now expect the script to adapt dynamically, referencing their current hardware—such as the Nintendo Switch—instead of the now-obsolete hardware reference of the mid-2000s.

A Broad Release Strategy

This attention to detail serves as a hallmark of Konami’s approach to the Master Collection series, which aims to preserve these classics while making them accessible to contemporary audiences.

The Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 is currently scheduled for a multi-platform release, arriving on both the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2 on August 27, 2026. By bridging the gap between legacy titles and current-gen consoles, Konami continues to prove that even the most specific, platform-dependent jokes can find a second life with a little bit of creative TLC.
