Minecraft Is Making Changes To Minecoins On Nintendo Platforms

Minecraft Announces Major Changes to Minecoin Usage Ahead of Switch 2 Launch

As the gaming community prepares for the highly anticipated arrival of Minecraft on the Switch 2 this October, developer Mojang has announced significant structural changes regarding the platform’s virtual economy. Starting October 27, 2026—the same day the title launches on Nintendo’s new hardware—the way players manage and spend Minecoins on Nintendo consoles will see a shift toward a more platform-restricted model.

New Restrictions on Cross-Platform Currency

Under the updated policy, Minecoins purchased specifically on Nintendo platforms (including both the original Switch and the upcoming Switch 2) will become locked to those systems. Consequently, any Minecoins acquired on a non-Nintendo device will no longer be available for use within the Minecraft Marketplace on Nintendo hardware.

This move marks a departure from the previously seamless cross-platform currency system that allowed players to share their digital wallet across different devices.

What Happens to Your Existing Balance?

Mojang has reassured current players that their existing balances will not be forfeited. Any Minecoins held in a user’s account prior to the October 27 deadline will be automatically transferred to a “Legacy Wallet.”

These Legacy Minecoins will retain their cross-platform functionality, meaning they can still be used on any device. Mojang has confirmed there is no expiration date on these funds, noting that “they will get used up first” whenever a transaction is made, ensuring that players exhaust their legacy balance before needing to purchase new, platform-restricted coins.

Shopping for Minecoins: A Note on Retail Cards

In addition to digital store changes, Mojang is advising players to be more cautious when purchasing physical Minecoin cards at retail. Because of these new restrictions, certain retail cards may no longer be compatible with Nintendo hardware.

“Look for the platforms listed on the packaging to ensure the card supports where you intend to play,” the developer stated in their official guidance. Players are encouraged to verify compatibility before making a purchase to avoid compatibility issues.

The Road to Switch 2

These adjustments arrive as part of the broader rollout of Minecraft on the Switch 2. For those currently playing on the original Nintendo Switch, Mojang has already confirmed a digital upgrade path, allowing for a smoother transition to the next generation of hardware.

While these changes may necessitate a change in habits for players who frequently jump between consoles, Mojang’s commitment to a “Legacy Wallet” ensures that current assets remain protected. As the October launch window approaches, players should check their account balances and prepare for these platform-specific adjustments to their digital inventories.
