Mumbai Rising: Air India Pivots Westward as Pakistan Airspace Shuts Delhi Corridor

Air India Shifts Western Hub to Mumbai Amid Ongoing Pakistani Airspace Restrictions

NEW DELHI: Air India is set to recalibrate its international flight operations, shifting a significant portion of its Europe- and US-bound capacity from Delhi to Mumbai. The move comes as the national carrier grapples with the persistent closure of Pakistani airspace, a hurdle that has disproportionately impacted its long-haul western network compared to its global rivals.

Air India CEO Tewolde Gebremariam announced the strategic pivot on Tuesday at the Aviation India and South Asia 2026 conference. While the airline intends to maintain its footprint in the national capital, the operational load for western routes will increasingly be handled by Mumbai to bypass the navigational challenges posed by the restricted airspace.

Strategic Realignment for Growth

Addressing industry stakeholders, Gebremariam emphasized that this restructuring is essential for the airline to reclaim its lost overseas market share. “Most of our network, unfortunately, in Europe and America, has been affected by the airspace closure,” he noted. By concentrating western traffic in Mumbai, the airline hopes to mitigate the impact of the flight path disruptions.

Conversely, Delhi will remain the primary engine for the airline’s expansion into East and Southeast Asia, where flight paths remain unaffected by the current geopolitical tensions in the west. This bifurcation of hubs is a key element of the carrier’s broader effort to streamline its international connectivity.

Expanding the Hub-and-Spoke Model

Looking beyond the current crisis, Gebremariam outlined a vision for India to transform into a premier global aviation transit point. He identified the nation’s demographic dividend, robust economic growth, and an extensive diaspora as natural advantages that could facilitate this evolution.

The airline is actively evaluating Bengaluru as a potential third international hub to supplement Delhi and Mumbai. Furthermore, Gebremariam suggested that cities like Hyderabad could eventually serve as vital gateways, allowing Air India to move away from a single-hub dependency. The carrier aims to significantly increase its transit traffic, which currently represents only 10% of its total business, as it builds a more competitive network.

Financial Efficiency and Cost Controls

Profitability remains at the forefront of the airline’s agenda. Gebremariam conceded that the carrier’s current cost per available seat kilometre (CASK) is unsustainably high. To rectify this, a dedicated multi-functional team has been tasked with identifying and eliminating inefficiencies.

As part of these cost-optimization efforts, the airline is seeking deeper integration between its full-service arm, Air India, and its low-cost subsidiary, Air India Express. By consolidating common corporate functions, the management hopes to lower operational overheads.

Navigating Short-Term Headwinds

While issues like fluctuating fuel prices and instability in West Asia affect all global airlines, Gebremariam highlighted that the Pakistani airspace closure remains a “unique problem” for Air India. He categorized this as a specific, short-term handicap that puts the national carrier at a disadvantage compared to international competitors who do not face similar geographical constraints.

To ensure long-term competitiveness, the CEO confirmed that the airline is currently evaluating an expanded order for wide-body aircraft, signaling that Air India is committed to aggressive growth despite the current atmospheric, and geopolitical, turbulence.
