Nvidia’s Controversial DLSS 5 Tech Launches with NBA 2K7, Sparks Performance and Artistic Debate

Nvidia is set to roll out its highly anticipated and deeply divisive DLSS 5 technology this week, marking a significant shift in how artificial intelligence interacts with gaming visuals. While previous iterations of Deep Learning Super Sampling focused primarily on performance optimization and upscaling, DLSS 5 introduces “3D-Guided Neural Rendering,” a technology that aims to fundamentally transform visual fidelity.

The debut of this new tech will arrive via a GeForce driver update scheduled for Thursday night (9pm PDT) in the US and early Friday morning (5am BST). For now, the rollout is limited to a single title—NBA 2K7—and will be exclusive to hardware running the GeForce 50-series graphics cards, laptops, and GeForce Now.

Beyond Upscaling: The Rise of Neural Rendering

In a recent official blog post, Nvidia explained that DLSS 5 goes beyond reconstructing existing data to boost resolution or frame rates. Instead, the company claims the AI can generate rich lighting and material details that developers are often forced to strip away due to the hardware constraints of real-time rendering.

“DLSS 5 becomes the final rendering stage of the graphics pipeline,” Nvidia stated. “It infuses scenes with lifelike lighting and materials while ensuring the engine frame defines what must remain, and the artist directs what may change.”

Artistic Integrity vs. “Yassification”

Despite the technical promise, DLSS 5 has faced significant backlash since it was teased earlier this year. Early demonstrations, which included images of Resident Evil Requiem character Grace Ashcroft, drew sharp criticism from the gaming community. Many users labeled the results as “yassification,” arguing that the AI-driven filters were artificially applying beauty standards and altering the original artistic vision of character models rather than enhancing them.

As the technology leaked ahead of this week’s release, modders began testing it in other titles, including Control, GTA 5, Cyberpunk 2077, and The Witcher 3. These tests have produced mixed results, with some players noting that the neural filters significantly alter the appearance of iconic characters like Geralt of Rivia, further fueling the debate over whether AI should have such a heavy hand in game aesthetics.

The Performance Cost

Perhaps the most ironic aspect of DLSS 5’s arrival is its impact on frame rates. Historically, DLSS has been synonymous with performance gains, but this “neural” evolution appears to be quite taxing on hardware.

Reports indicate that enabling the feature comes with a massive performance penalty. While Nvidia’s promotional materials suggest high frame rates, critics have noted these figures often rely on “6x multi-frame generation” marketing. Without that multiplication, the reality is much bleaker: according to independent analysis, a GeForce RTX 5060 struggles to maintain 43 FPS at 1080p, and even the flagship RTX 5090 only just breaks the 60 FPS threshold at 4K.

Nvidia remains optimistic, noting that they have achieved a “5X performance gain in just six months” since the tech’s March announcement. The company stated that they have further optimizations in the pipeline for the autumn, aiming to boost performance beyond the current baseline.

For now, players remain divided. While the promise of enhanced lighting and photorealistic materials is enticing, the concerns regarding artistic autonomy and the steep hardware cost ensure that DLSS 5 will remain one of the most contentious additions to the PC gaming ecosystem for the foreseeable future.
