Ormax data exposes Bollywood’s succession CRISIS: Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Ranbir Kapoor dominate, but Hindi cinema hasn’t built its next superstar generation : Bollywood News

Ormax Media recently released its Stars India Loves data and it threw light on a problem Bollywood can no longer ignore: its biggest stars are ageing, but the next generation has not fully arrived. According to the report, the average age of the Top 5 male Hindi film stars has gone up from 47 years in 2019 to 54 years in 2025. The concern is not just age; it is the lack of churn at the top.

The 2025 Top 5 male stars, according to Ormax, are Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, and Ranbir Kapoor. In 2019, the list featured Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, Ranveer Singh, Hrithik Roshan and Shah Rukh Khan. That means four names are common across both lists. In simple terms, the industry’s most popular male stars have largely remained the same over six years.

Ormax’s report states that in the long run, this will pose a serious challenge since they have observed that 57% of Hindi box office comes from the 15-30 age group. It says, “A star system cannot remain frozen in time. As these four stars age further, a vacuum will inevitably emerge, and if the next line has not been built by then, the industry is bound to face structural weakness.”

Ormax also made an interesting observation that romance, romcoms, and coming-of-age stories are perceived to be weak genres. They write, “The problem is not the genre appeal at all. It’s simply the absence of young top-tier stars who can make these genres feel aspirational and event-worthy again. Every film industry needs older stars at the top, but it also needs younger stars steadily rising beneath them. That is what keeps the ecosystem dynamic, future-facing, and creatively broad.”

Finally, Ormax doesn’t mince words as it exposes that the need of the hour is not just PR visibility or short-term positioning, but deliberate star creation through the right scripts, screen images, genres and career planning. Otherwise, Hindi cinema risks weakening its own future.
