India in Command: Pant’s Record-Breaking Blitz Puts Tourists on Brink of Victory in Sri Lanka Test

Galle, Sri Lanka – August 18, 2026 – India stands poised for a resounding victory in the opening Test against Sri Lanka, as a sensational batting display led by Rishabh Pant, coupled with a dominant bowling performance, has left the hosts with a monumental task on a rapidly deteriorating Galle pitch. India, bowled out for 193 in their second innings late on day four, have set Sri Lanka an imposing target, with four sessions remaining and the turn clearly favoring the tourists.

The day’s proceedings were dominated by the mercurial Pant, who electrified the crowd with a breathtaking 66 off just 69 deliveries. His innings, studded with eight fours and two towering sixes, not only rescued India from a precarious position but also saw him etch his name into the record books. The swashbuckling left-hander became the fastest batsman in Test history to reach 100 sixes, achieving the feat in a mere 89 innings. This remarkable milestone eclipsed the previous record held by Australian legend Adam Gilchrist, who took 130 innings to reach the same mark.

While Pant hogged the headlines, valuable contributions also came from Devdutt Padikkal, who followed up his impressive first-innings century with a well-made 44. Padikkal arrived at the crease in the very first over after Yashasvi Jaiswal fell for a third-ball duck, and steadied the ship alongside K.L. Rahul (35) in a crucial 65-run partnership for the second wicket. Despite regular breakthroughs by the Sri Lankan bowlers, Pant’s aggressive intent ensured India maintained the upper hand throughout.

Sri Lankan fast bowler Asitha Fernando was the pick of the home attack, skillfully exploiting the conditions to claim impressive figures of 4-31, effectively wrapping up the Indian innings. His efforts ensured India’s lead, while significant, wasn’t insurmountable had it not been for Pant’s heroics.

The match also saw an unfortunate incident involving Sri Lankan veteran Dinesh Chandimal. The experienced batsman was ruled out of the remainder of the game after sustaining a concussion while fielding. Chandimal injured himself when he hit his head on the ground, leading to the introduction of uncapped Pasindu Sooriyabandara as a concussion substitute.

With the pitch offering considerable turn and the Sri Lankan batting lineup facing immense pressure, India looks favourites to go 1-0 up in the series. The stage is set for a gripping final day, but all signs point towards a comfortable Indian victory, solidifying their dominance on this challenging Sri Lankan tour.
