The incident has happened on Thursday morning between the Windle Island junction of the East Lancs Road and Moss Bank Road.
In a statement issued shortly after 9am, Merseyside Police explained the situation related to concerns for a woman near to the Abbey Road area.
The statement: “We can confirm that emergency services are currently in St Helens today, Thursday 9 July.
“At around 6.40am we received a call of a concern for safety of a woman in her 20s.
“Both carriageways of the East Lancashire Road are currently closed between Rainford Road and Moss Bank Road. We ask that the public avoid the area and find an alternative route.”
