Police officer taken to hospital after being injured in North East crash while responding to emergency


Emergency Services were called to the scene after a collision a junction in Darlington on early Tuesday morning

An officer has been injured with a ‘suspected broken arm’ and a police car has been left smashed following a collision in County Durham. The police car is said to have collided with another vehicle at the traffic light junction with Portland Place on Woodland Road in Darlington shortly before 6.30am on Tuesday.

Durham Constabulary said the officer driving the police car was responding to a call for assistance at Darlington Memorial Hospital when the crash happened. The officer sustained a suspected broken arm following the collision and was taken to hospital, police have confirmed.

Following the collision, Emergency services including the North East Ambulance Service were called to the scene. A section of the road between St Augustine’s Way and Stanhope Road North was taped off for several hours by officers, with motorists advised to seek an alternative route.

Photos from the scene show the aftermath of the crash with several vehicles behind the cordon, as the bumper of police car was left crumpled. The driver of the other vehicle involved, understood to be a silver car seen behind the cordon, was left with a bump to their head.

A spokesperson from Durham Constabulary said: “The officer was driving a police car on blue lights just before 6.30am when they were involved in a collision on Woodland Road. They were responding to a call for assistance at Darlington Memorial Hospital when the collision occurred.

“The officer was taken to hospital for treatment for a suspected broken arm. The driver of the other vehicle sustained a bump to their head.

“The road was closed in both directions while enquiries were carried out at the scene and the vehicles recovered, but has since reopened.”

A NEAS spokesperson said: “We received a call at 6:33am this morning (14 July) to reports of a road traffic incident on Woodland Road in Darlington.

“We sent one emergency ambulance to the scene along with police colleagues who also attended.

“There were three patients at the scene but none required transport to hospital by ambulance.”
