Riot Will End Active Development On 2XKO At The End Of The Year

Riot Games to Cease Active Development on 2XKO Fighting Game by Year’s End

In a surprising move that underscores the brutal volatility of the live-service market, Riot Games has announced that it will end active development on its tag-team fighting game, 2XKO, at the end of December. Despite a high-profile debut and significant backing from the publisher, the title failed to cultivate the long-term player base required to keep the project viable.

The announcement, delivered via the game’s official website, paints a picture of a project that caught fire early but struggled to keep the flame alive. While Riot noted that the title saw considerable initial interest and a dedicated core of high-level players, the company ultimately decided that it “[hadn’t] seen enough players stick with the game to get to a path toward sustainability.”

As a result, the studio will officially end active development on the title in December.

A Rocky Road to Release

The downfall of 2XKO was not sudden, but rather the culmination of a troubled lifecycle. The game’s console launch was marred by technical performance issues, and momentum was further stifled when Riot laid off approximately 80 employees from the development team just one month after the game hit storefronts.

Despite these headwinds, 2XKO attempted to cement its place in the competitive scene, even earning a spot on the main stage at EVO earlier this year. However, the prestige of tournament play could not offset the lack of broader, consistent player retention.

Riot expressed a sense of disappointment regarding the outcome, noting that the team had originally hoped to grow the audience incrementally by “earning the trust of core fighting game players.” The irony of the situation remains palpable: the game is being effectively shelved less than a year after its official launch.

The Sunset Roadmap

While the "active development" phase is concluding, Riot is opting for a graceful exit rather than an immediate server shutdown. The company has released a detailed end-of-life plan to support the existing player base:

  • Content Updates: Through the remainder of 2026, the team will continue to roll out bug fixes, feature improvements, and two final champions: Lux and Samira.
  • Accessibility: Servers will remain operational beyond 2026, and offline play will be unaffected.
  • Monetization Changes: In a move to provide goodwill to its community, Riot is unlocking all champions and bundling most cosmetic items.
  • Refunds: All money spent on the game on or before August 20 will be fully refunded to players.

Riot has stated that any content currently owned will remain with the players, and future avatar and profile items will be made available for Credits starting with Patch 1.3.1 this September.

As the industry continues to grapple with the "games-as-a-service" model, 2XKO serves as a stark reminder that even titles backed by industry giants are not immune to the harsh realities of player retention. For now, the servers will stay on, allowing the remaining community to enjoy the project until further notice.
